Early political career

Manchin was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1982 at the age of 35, and in 1986 he was elected to the West Virginia Senate, where he served until 1996. In 1996, he ran for governor, but Charlotte Pritt lost the Democratic primary election. In 2000, he was elected Secretary of State of West Virginia.
