Mighty Gabby Career

Career

Carter, a boy from Emmerton, was given the nickname "Gabby" as a youth, and he gained the title of Barbados Calypso Monarch in 1968. He won the title again in 1969 with "Family Planning." Rather than build on this success, he concentrated on acting for the next two years, attending the Barbados Theater Workshop and composing a large portion of the play Under the Duplicate Parasol, which had a fruitful run in New York.

In 1976, he returned to music and carnival triumph, with his "Licks Like Fire" winning his first of a string of victories at Crop Over. For three years, he was named "Riots in the Land," "Bridgetown," and "Bajan Fisherman." With "Burn Mr Harding," he won the Crop Over Road March title in 1979 and moved to Cuba.

With "Cadavers," a commentary on the Barbados government's decision to allow dead bodies from the US to be stored on the island, Gabby courted controversy in 1985; he was sued by the government, but Prime Minister Tom Adams died before the trial was heard; fortunately, the initiative was eventually shelved. He continued to produce controversial stuff, including "The List," which criticized the local tourist industry for providing preferential treatment to foreign visitors, and "Boots," an attack on the government's assistance in the US invasion of Grenada.

For the third time in 1985, he received the Calypso Monarch crown, as "West Indian Politician" was his keyword.

He began his career in the late 1980s in the UK with singer and producer Eddy Grant, who operated the Blue Wave studio, and was able to reach a wider audience.

He has competed for the Calypso Monarch crown on four occasions, in 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2010.

In 2004, he was named Barbados' Cultural Ambassador.

"Where in the World is Matt Lauer?" accompanied many Barbadian entertainers on November 11, 2011. On NBC, a segment called "Underground" was shown.

The University of the West Indies granted him an honorary Doctor of Letter degree in 2012.

In 2007, Gabby was named a Nigerian chief in a service at the Sons of God Apostolic Spiritual Baptist Church in Ealing Grove, Barbados. Gabby, a Nigerian tourist, was given the nickname Omowale, which means "our son has returned." The service was also held on the United Nations designated Black Civilization Day.

Gabby is known as Barbados' "foremost folk singer."
