Dick Gaughan Life

Richard Peter Gaughan (born 17 May 1948) is a Scottish musician, singer, and songwriter, best known for folk and social protest songs.

He is regarded as one of Scotland's finest singer-songwriters.

Early years

Gaughan was born in Glasgow's Royal Maternity Hospital while his father was employed in Glasgow as an engine technician. He spent the first year-and-a-half of his life in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, before the family moved to Leith, a port on Edinburgh's outskirts.

Gaughan, the eldest of three children, grew up surrounded by the sounds of Scotland and Ireland. His mother, a Highland Scot from Lochaber who spoke Gaelic, received a silver medal for performing at a Gaelic Md. His father, a Leith native, played guitar. His Irish-born paternal grandfather, a native of Erris, County Mayo, played the fiddle and his paternal grandmother, a Glaswegian born to Irish parents, played button accordion and sang. The family suffered a lot of poverty, but the community in which they lived exhibited a strong sense of spirit, and many of Gaughan's songs honor his working-class roots. Gaughan served as an apprentice at a local paper mill in his teens, but he had aspired to be a guitarist from the age of seven. He became interested in the local folk music scene and formed the Edinburgh Folk Centre with two others. He began working as a programmer in early 1970 and migrated to London.
