Mick McNeil Career

Playing career

McNeil was born in Middlesbrough, and after leaving school, the Middlesbrough Boys player began to study to become an analytical chemist. Middlesbrough coach Jimmy Gordon discovered him and signed for Boro.

He made his Middlesbrough debut aged 18, in a match verus Brighton in which Boro won 6–4. He soon lost his job, but the next season he went left-back and took the position as his own, and has been in place for the next two seasons. Despite Middlesbrough's appearance in the Second Division, McNeil was called up by the England national team, who had already represented the under-23 team. He was just 21 when he got his first cap.

McNeil shuffled around the defensive line to central defense, then to right-back before Cyril Knowles' arrival pushed him back to the left.

McNeil's transfer to Ipswich Town in 1964 was met with skepticism by the fans, who also lost Alan Peacock and Knowles recently. McNeil had suffered injuries of late and had disagreements with manager Raich Carter, who had to give his transfer request.

McNeil received promotion while at Ipswich. In 1971, he quit football to establish a highly profitable sports outfitter in Bury St Edmunds.
