Michael Frederick "Mick" Box (born 9 June 1947 in Walthamstow, East London, England), is the lead guitarist of British rock band Uriah Heep, having appeared with The Stalkers and Spice before, as well as original Uriah Heep vocalist David Byron.
He is the only member of the band's founding in 1969 who is still active with the group.
Early influences
Mick Box said in 2018 that he was inspired by Les Paul and Mary Ford, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel, and Barney Kessel. He attributes some of these influences to his first guitar instructor, Django Reinhardt's second guitarist, as well as a coming from a jazz background.
Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin were among Uriah Heep's new bands when he first began to perform with Uriah Heep.
Spice was used in the beginning of Uriah Heep Box's band. David Byron and Nigel Pegrum Box performed from 1968 to 1969, and the band chose the word because they didn't want to be restricted to a narrow category. "There are a lot of spices, and that was our train of thought with the band's name," Box said in a 2021 interview. Uriah Heep emerged after Ken Hensley joined the Spicers.
Mick Box blaming the COVID-19 pandemic for postponing a 50th Anniversary Celebration, but he was planning on a 52-year anniversary. He found it strange to be quarantined because he was accustomed to being "on the road" and visiting fans at concerts. He has used the time to write songs and he has made some videos for the Lockdown Diaries.
Box has used his gifts to support the Nightingale Cancer Support Centre.
