Wilhelmina would have a different assistant in each episode, according to the show's founder, so Urie was first introduced as a guest star in the credits. Williams, on the other hand, adored their chemistry, and Urie was signed as a full-time regular midway through the first season. In 2007, and 2008, he and the cast were nominated for Outstanding Achievement by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. In 2009, Urie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Urie has returned often to his theater roots, including directing a one-night performance of Howard Ashman's unproduced musical Dreamstuff. Howard's collaborators, Marsha Malamet and Dennis Green, reimagined the musical and appeared at Hayworth Theatre for one night as part of the Bruno Kirby celebrity reading series. He has appeared on Live with Regis and Kelly, as well as in the 2008 Disney blockbuster film Beverly Hills Chihua as Sebastian's voice.
Rudi Gernreich appeared in The Temperamentals, a 2009 off-Broadway play about the Mattachine Society's early LGBT rights group. For Outstanding Lead Actor, Urie was given the Lucille Lortel Award.
