Michael Shaara Life

Michael Shaara (June 23, 1928-May 5, 1988) was an American writer of science fiction, sports fiction, and historical fiction. * He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to an Italian immigrant father (the family name is still written in Italian) and served as a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division before the Korean War. He was an amateur boxer and police officer before Shaara began selling science fiction books to fiction magazines in the 1950s. * He later taught literature at Florida State University before turning to write fiction. * The strain of this and his cigarette smoking brought him to a heart attack at 36 years old, which he recovered completely. In 1975, his book The Battle of Gettysburg, The Killer Angels, received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Shaara died of a heart attack in 1988 at the age of fifty-nine. Jeffrey and Lila, Shaara's children, are also novelists. Jeffrey Shaara established the annual Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction in 1997, which was given to Jeffrey Shaara at Gettysburg College.
