William Kennedy Career

Career

After college, Kennedy began working as a sports reporter in Glens Falls, and began his journey in journalism. He was born in 1950 and spent in the US Army, where he worked for an Army newspaper in Europe. Following his release from service, Kennedy joined the Albany Times Union as a reporter. He then moved to Puerto Rico in 1956 and became the managing editor of the San Juan Star, a new English language newspaper. When living in San Juan, he befriended journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson, a friendship that continued throughout their careers.

While in Puerto Rico, Kennedy met his mentor, Saul Bellow, who pushed him to write books.

Kennedy, who had hoped to leave Albany and worked for the Albany newspaper the Times Union as an investigative journalist, writing articles exposing Daniel P. O'Connell and his political allies of the dominant Democratic Party. In 2011, book critic Jonathan Yardley described Albany as "a portrait of a single city possibly unique in American fiction."

Kennedy has received numerous honorary degrees, was given the inaugural SUNY Medallion of Distinction in May 2012 by the Chancellor of the State University of New York, and has also joined the SUNY Distinguished Academy as a board-appointed Distinguished Professor.

Kennedy taught creative writing and journalism at the University of Albany from 1974 to 1982, before moving to 1983 as a full professor. During the 1982-1983 academic year, he taught writing at Cornell University as a visiting professor.
