Mercedes J. Ruehl (born February 28, 1948) is an American film and stage actor.
She has been named recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Drama Desk Award, a Drama Desk Prize, two Obie Awards, and two Outer Critics Circle Awards. Ruehl is known for her leading role in the play Lost in Yonkers (1990) and her supporting role in the 1991 film The Fisher King (1991).

Early life and education
Ruehl was born in Jackson Heights, New York City, on February 28, 1948, to Mercedes J. Ruehl, a schoolteacher, and Vincent Ruehl, an FBI agent. Her father was of German and Irish descent, and her mother was of Cuban and Irish descent. Due to Vincent Ruehl's work with the FBI, the family migrated often in her childhood, including Silver Spring, Maryland. Peter and her brother, Peter, were raised Catholic.
She obtained a BA in English from the College of New Rochelle in 1969.
Personal life
Ruehl married painter David Geiser in 1999, with whom she had adopted Jake (born 1995). Christopher, her older brother, who she adopted in 1976 when she was 28 years old. They were reunited in the late 1990s when he was 21 years old, and then Christopher became Jake's godfather. Ruehl and Geiser put their Hampton home on sale in 2017; the same year Ruehl was listed as saying they were no longer married but they remained close. David Geiser died unexpectedly of heart disease in his sleep at home on October 14, 2020, at the age of 73.
Peter, her brother, died in 2011 after being a well-known newspaper columnist until he died in 2011.
Career
Ruehl began her work with the Denver Center Theatre Company, working in odd jobs in between engagements. She was almost cast in the sixth season of Saturday Night Live in 1980, but Denny Dillon fought for her position. In 1984's I'm Not Rappaport, she had her first acting role on Broadway. She went on to win the 1984 Obie Award for her appearance in The Marriage of Bette and Boo and 20 years later, she received the Obie for Woman Before a Glass. She has since been named Best Actress (Play) for Neil Simon's Lost in Yonkers (1996) and has continued her appearance in the series along with co-star Mercedes McCambridge. In 1995, she received two Tony nominations for a revival of The Shadow Box, as Best Actress (Play) for Edward Albee's The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?
Her most well-known film role was in The Fisher King; her appearance in the film earned her the 1991 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, an American Comedy Award, a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award, and a Golden Globe. She had been recognized for her role in Married to the Mob by the National Society of Film Critics in 1989 for her Best Supporting Actress. In five episodes of Frasier, she appeared as KACL station manager Kate Costas, and she appeared in All-American Girl: The Mary Kay Letourneau Story. The Rita Moreno HOLA Award for Excellence was given to her in 2005 by the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (along with Esai Morales). In HBO's Entourage, she appeared as the mother of main character Vincent Chase.
Eva Adler appeared onstage in Richard Greenberg's The American Plan in 2009, returning to the stage in Manhattan Theater Club's production of The American Plan in 2009. The limited engagement ran at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre from January 22 to March 22. Ben Brantley's rave review in The New York Times called Ruehl's appearance "masterfully" in his "intuitive" review. Ruehl appeared in the drama/horror film What Ever Happened to Barker Daniels?, which was released in 2009. Ruehl appeared in Sarah Treem's play The How and The Why, directed by Emily Mann at Princeton University's McCarter Theatre in January 2011.
