Marcia Strassman Career

Life and career

Strassman was born in New York City and raised in Passaic, New Jersey. She appeared in a Patty Duke Show episode as one of her first acting appearances. She took over Ethel Hofflinger's role in the Off-Broadway musical Best Foot Forward in 1963, at the age of 15.

She became a recording artist for Uni Records in 1967. "The Flower Children," her debut single, was a top-40 hit in several West Coast US markets, debuting at #1 in San Diego and #2 in San Francisco; the track also reached #1 in Vancouver, British Columbia, (both at CKLG 730 AM and CFUN 1410 AM on July 1967). However, the single failed to break out nationally in either region; in the United States, it remained at #05 and recently slipped into RPM's Top 100 for Canada, peaking at #95. On Cashbox's Top 100 Singles chart, the song also ranked #95.

"The Groovy World of Jack and Jill", Jack and Jill's sequel, was charted in Denver, Colorado, but not so much elsewhere. "Star Gazer" (1968), Kim Fowley's third single, failed to chart anywhere, brought Strassman's brief recording career to a close. She returned to acting after a few years, starring Nurse Margie Cutler in six early M*A*S*H episodes.

On the ABC comedy series Welcome Back, Kotter, she landed Julie Kotter, the wife of title character high school teacher Gabe Kotter (Gabe Kaplan) in 1975. The series lasted four years. Strassman was told that Kaplan wanted her to leave the series, and that doing on the show made her "miserable." Kaplan read the interview and found that series creator James Komack was separately telling the two actors that they didn't like each other, and that Kaplan told Strassman that he actually wanted more balance between Kotter's work and home environments, which would give her the opportunity to do more on the series. Strassman, a guest host on The Tonight Show, joined the tale as an interviewer; she recalled the incident decades earlier on a Biography Channel special about Kotter's past.

Strassman appeared on Time Express, The Rockford Files, and The Love Boat as guest stars in the 1970s and other television shows. In 1980, she appeared in Lenina Crowne's television version of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. That year, she appeared in the short-lived sitcom Good Time Harry. She appeared on the Magnum P.I. "Heal Thyself" by actress Karen Harmon, a former nurse in Vietnam with whom the title character appeared. Maria Giannin appeared in Soup for One in 1982.

She appeared in 1989-90 on the 21 Jump Street spin-off, Booker, starring Richard Grieco in the title role. In 1996, she appeared on Murder, She Wrote. Strassman appeared in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), and Honey, I Blew Up the Child (1992). I Shrunk the Audience, she re-enacted in 1994 in the 3-D film spin-off Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. She went on to appear Nancy Sterngood on the television series Tremors (2003).
