Georgia Bright Engel (July 28, 1948 – April 12, 2019) was an American actress.

She is best known for her appearances on The Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1972 to 1977, as well as Pat MacDougall on Everybody Loves Raymond from 2003 to 2005.

Engel received five Primetime Emmy Award nominations in her career.

Early life

Georgia Engel was born in Washington, D.C., the granddaughter of Ruth Caroline (née Hendron) and Benjamin Franklin Engel, who served as a Vice Admiral in the United States Coast Guard. Engel attended Walter Johnson High School and the Washington Ballet Academy, which she earned, in Kodiak Island. She earned her theater degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Personal life and death

Engel was a Christian Science adherent. She died in Princeton, New Jersey, on April 12, 2019. According to John Quilty's New York Times, the cause was unclear since Engel did not consult doctors due to her religious convictions. She was buried in Cape Charles, Virginia, at Cape Charles Cemetery.

Career

Engel performed in musical productions with the American Light Opera Company in Washington, D.C. She first appeared on Broadway in Lend an Ear in 1969 and then in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly! The House of Blue Leaves, a 1971 off-Broadway production, later appeared in Los Angeles, where Engel was seen by Mary Tyler Moore and her partner, producer Grant Tinker, and her soon-to-be employers.

Georgette on the Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1972 to 1977, Engel portrayed Georgette. The role received her two Emmy nominations. Betty White, a former Mary Tyler Moore Show co-star, appeared in The Betty White Show for the first time (1977–78) seasons after the sitcom ended. Loretta Smoot, a short-lived 1980s sitcom, and Jennifer Slept Here starring Ann Jillian, she appeared on two short-lived television shows, Goodtime Girls as Loretta Smoot and Ann Jillian.

As Shirley Burleigh and starred as Love-a-Lot Bear in The Care Bears Movie (1985), Engel had a regular role on Coach. In a 2007 recurring role of Esmeralda on the now-defunct NBC soap opera Passions, she played a good witch. Pat MacDougall, Robert Barone's mother-in-law, was nominated for three consecutive Emmy Awards in 2003, 2004, and 2005 for her role on Everybody Loves Raymond. Cassie Wilson appeared on two episodes of Neighbours as Cassie Wilson.

Engel made her "big screen" debut in Milo Forman's first English-language film Taking Off (1971), playing "Margot," a performance that earned her a BAFTA nomination for best supporting actress. Signs of Life (1977), The Outside Man (1973), Signs of Life (1989), The Sweetest Thing (2002), and A Love Affair (1978) are among her film appearances.

She gave her distinctive voice to the animated films Open Season (2006), Open Season 2 (2008), Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001).

Engel returned to her stage roots in 2006, appearing on Broadway in the musical The Drowsy Chaperone with Sutton Foster and Edward Hibbert. Mrs. Tottendale, which she performed in, was created by her, she left Broadway in 2007 as of April 1, 2007. She appeared in the North American tour in September 2007, appeared in Toronto in September 2007, and in October 2008 at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

Engel appeared in various productions at The Muny Theatre in Forest Park, Missouri, during the summers of 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2010. Parthy appeared on the Showboat in August 2010. Agnes Gooch, a girl from Mame in July 2005, appeared in Mame in June 2007 and appeared in Oklahoma! Engel appeared at The Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine, in June 2010 as Mrs. Tottendale. Engel appeared in the Vineyard Theatre's off-Broadway production of Middletown, written by Will Eno in October through December 2010.

Irene, an older lady being supported by Erin Hannon, appeared in episodes of The Office in 2012. Lyndsey McElroy, Alan's mother, appeared in two episodes of Two and a Half Men as the mother of Lyndsey McElroy, Alan's girlfriend. Evelyn's mother, Alan's grandmother, will also be a lesbian lover. Engel was reunited with Betty White in Cleveland's third season of Hot in Cleveland as Mamie Sue Johnson, White's best friend in a recurring role.

Engel appeared in the new Annie Baker play John, which opened off-Broadway at the Signature Theatre on July 22, 2015 (previews), directed by Sam Gold. The play ran from September 6, 2015. Lois Smith appeared in the film as well. Engel received the 2016 Obie Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress, as part of this production.

Engel appeared in the musical Gotta Dance, which premiered at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago on December 13, 2015, and ran until January 17, 2016. Stefanie Powers, Lillias White, and André De Shields were also included in the cast. Jerry Mitchell, Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin's book, and Matthew Sklar and Nell Benjamin's score were supervised and choreographed, while Jerry Mitchell, Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin's book, was accompanied by Jerry Mitchell. Half Time, the musical, appeared at the Millburn, New Jersey, for a limited period. The production began on May 31, 2018 and was expected to run until July 1, 2018.
