Mellody Hobson (born April 3, 1969) is an American businesswoman who is president and co-CEO of Ariel Investments.
She is the former chairwoman of DreamWorks Animation after NBCUniversal announced in August that she had stepped down after negotiating the acquisition of DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc., Inc.
She was the first African-American woman to head The Economic Club of Chicago in 2017.
Early life and education
Hobson, the youngest child in a family of six children, graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago in 1987 and 1991, and Princeton University in 1991. Hobson was a member of the Cottage Club in Princeton.
Personal life
After meeting at a business conference, Hobson began dating film director and producer George Lucas in 2006. Hobson and Lucas announced their engagement in January 2013 and were married on June 22, 2013, at Lucas' Skywalker Ranch. Everest Hobson Lucas, who was born via surrogacy in August 2013, has one daughter together.

Career
Hobson joined Ariel Investments, a Chicago investment company that manages nearly $13 billion in assets as an intern shortly after she graduated from Princeton. She rose to become the firm's senior vice president and director of marketing. She aspired to become the company's president in 2000. It is also one of the country's largest money management and mutual fund firms. She was a contributor to several Good Morning America financial segments for many years.
Hobson is also chairman of Ariel Investment Trust's board of trustees. She is a regular contributor on CBS This Morning and has served as a spokesperson for the annual Ariel/Schwab Black Investor Survey.
Hobson serves on the board of several organizations, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., the Chicago Public Education Fund, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, and the Sundance Institute. In addition, she is on the board of directors of Starbucks Corporation, and formerly of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.'s "20 Leaders of Tomorrow" (1992), the magazine's annual list of the country's top 100 influential individuals (1992), and "Women to Watch" (2004).
