Melinda Leanna Shankar (born February 18, 1992) is a Canadian actress.
She is best known for her role in the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation (2008-2015) and Indira "Indie" Mehta, for which she received numerous accolades, including a Canadian Screen Award in 2013.
Early life
Melinda Shankar was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on February 18, 1992, to Canadian parents of Hindu Indo-Guyanese descent who immigrated to Canada. She has two older sisters and a brother who is also an actor. She was born in Orleans, Ontario, a suburban suburb of Ottawa.
At the age of three, she began training ballet and karate. Shankar has a black belt in karate, which is also a black belt. She attended Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School in Ottawa until grade 11 before moving to Toronto when she was sixteen years old, as follows her appearance in Degrassi: The Next Generation in 2008.
Personal life
Shankar and her family migrated to Toronto in 2008 after she was cast in Degrassi. She currently resides in North York, a Toronto neighborhood.
Career
Shankar began her modeling career as a child model and appeared in a variety of print advertisements, including a Procter & Gamble billboard in Los Angeles. Shankar's mother was an actress and her paternal grandfather was a director in Guyana. Shankar's father used to drive up to five hours from Ottawa to Toronto for her auditions.
She debuted in 2008 as an actress in the popular CTV television series Degrassi, where she appeared as an incoming ninth grader. Shankar departed the show in 2015 after seven seasons.
How To Be Indie, a television series starring Sheryl Coveney in 2009. Indira "Indie" Metha played the lead role for two seasons. In October 24, 2011, the series's last episode appeared. Shankar received a Gemini Award in 2011 and a Canadian Screen Award in 2013.
Shankar appeared in her first film, Festival of Lights, in 2010. The film was shot on location in New York City and Georgetown, Guyana. Due to her familiarity with Guyana's locations, her father served as the film's production manager.
Shankar and a long-time childhood friend first started working on an image consultancy firm in 2013.
