Melvin Douglas "Mel" Lastman (born March 9, 1933), nicknamed "Mayor Mel" or "Mega City Mel" in Canada, is a businessman and politician.
He is the maker of the Bad Boy Furniture chain.
He served as the mayor of North York, Ontario, Canada, from 1973 to 1997.
North York and five other municipalities were merged with the city of Toronto at the end of 1997.
Lastman ran for and won the mayoral election for the new "megacity," defeating incumbent Toronto Mayor Barbara Hall.

Early life
Lastman was born in Toronto in 1933, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, Rose, and Louis Lastman. He began selling fruit and vegetables at his family's Kensington Market grocery store as a child.
Marilyn Bornstein was 16 and she was 13, and he and him were married five years later. He left school after Grade 12 and began working at a College Street furniture store with Marilyn's assistance. Personal life
During a transplant in 1989, Lastman contracted hepatitis C. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he was one of thousands of Canadians infected with contaminated blood products distributed by the Canadian Red Cross. He spent most of his time in office dealing with his medical disorders, including a bout with cancer.
Lastman and his wife held a surprise news conference announcing that they had a 14-year affair with Grace Louie, a former Bad Boy employee, during his tenure as mayor. Louie and her two sons were sued for $6 million alleging that they were his legitimate children but that they did not have adequate child care. Although the two children were still young and unsuccessful in their attempt to claim a portion of his estate, it was also confirmed that he was indeed their father.
Marilyn Lastman, his wife, died on January 1, 2020 after a brief illness at the age of 84. At Mount Sinai Memorial Park in North York, the last man and his wife were laid to rest.
