Mary Ellen "Mel" Harris (born July 12, 1956) is an American actress best known for her role as Hope Murdoch Steadman in ABC's Thirtysomething (1987-1991), for which she received a Golden Globe award in 1990.

Early life

Harris was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Warren Harris, a high-school science instructor and a football coach at Bethlehem High School and Princeton University. Harris grew up in North Brunswick, New Jersey, and graduated from New Brunswick High School in 1974. Harris appeared on two occasions before achieving fame as an actor, on the ABC-TV daytime version known as The $20,000 Pyramid, and on the syndicated version The $100,000 Pyramid, both versions hosted by Dick Clark in 1979. She debuted on the third week of The $100,000 Pyramid, a John Davidson tribute, in 1991, with a clip of her big win in 1985 seen in a flashback clip.

Personal life

Harris has been married six times. She was married to David Silbergeld from 1978 to 1980; photographer David Hume Kennerly from 1983 to 1988 (with whom she had a child); and investment banker Michael Toomey from 2001 to 2006. Since 2009, she has been married to screenwriter and producer Bob Brush.

Career

Harris made her film debut in the 1987 action film Wanted: Dead or Alive starring Rutger Hauer. In the ABC drama series Thirtysomething starring Hope Murdoch Steadman, she continued to appear alongside Ken Olin, Patricia Wettig, Melanie Mayron, Timothy Busfield, Peter Horton, and Polly Draper. During its tenure, the series received critical acclaim, while Harris was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama in 1990. During the final season, she produced one episode. In 1991, the show came to an end. She appeared in Cameron's Closet (1988) and action comedy K-9 with Jim Belushi during that time. Madge Oberholtzer, a real-life victim of Madge Oberholtzer in the television series Cross of Fire, appeared in 1989. Harper's Bazaar named her one of America's Top Beautiful Women" in 1989.

Harris had several leading roles in the made-for-television films and miniseries including The Burden of Proof (1992), Ultimate Betrayal (1994), and The Women of Spring Break (1995). She co-starred in the 1992 psychological thriller film Raising Cain, and she appeared in the thriller film Suture for the first time the following year. The Pagemaster (1994), Hangman's Curse (2003), and The Lodger (2009) were among her other film credits. She appeared on NBC's Something So Right from 1996 to 1998. After two seasons, the series was cancelled.

Harris appeared in a number of television series in the 2000s, including Touched by an Angel, Stargate SG-1, The West Wing, JAG, House, and Criminal Minds. She appeared in the MyNetworkTV limited-run serial Saints & Sinners in 2007. At that time, she began writing as a writer. Scruples, a television drama series based on Judith Krantz' 1978 book, was executive producer and creator of the 2012 ABC drama pilot Scruples. Harris returned to television in 2013 after a six-year absence, appearing in two episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Harris appeared in the first season of Hulu's drama series Shut Eye in 2016, and he appeared in Bravo's comedy series Imposters from 2017 to 2018. ABC ordered a sequel to Thirtysomething in 2020, with Harris set to return alongside Olin, Busfield, and Wettig.
