Mel Blount Life

Melvin Cornell Blount (born April 10, 1948) is a former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback, five-time Pro Bowler, and a 1989 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee.

His physical appearance made him one of the game's most feared defensive backs at a time when pass interference laws were less stringent.

Mel Blount Youth Home was founded by him.

Early life

Blount was born in Toombs County, Georgia. On a Georgia farm, the early years of his life were spent in poverty. Blount was a star in baseball, football, basketball, and track at Lyons High School. He was given a scholarship to Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after graduating. While he was a Pro-Scouts All-American pick as both safety and cornerback, he was also a defender.

Mel Blount Career

Playing career

Blount was the prototype cornerback of his time, and a major reason why the Pittsburgh Steelers were the National Football League's top team in the 1970s. Despite rule changes that preferred receivers, he had the strength, speed, and agility for the role, as well as the flexibility and mental ability to adjust his coverage tactics and excel.

Blount joined the Steelers secondary in 1972 as both a safety and cornerback at Southern. He did not allow a single touchdown that season. Blount was equally effective in either zone or man-to-man defense. His trademark was the "buff-and-run" pass defense, which was known for his rugged style of play. He physically beat pass receivers due to his size and speed.

However, the laws surrounding pass coverage were changed midway through his career, making such bullying of a receiver unlawful. The rule will be referred to as the Mel Blount Rule. Blount had 57 interceptions in his career; they were back for 736 yards and two touchdowns. In all 14 NFL seasons, he intercepted at least one pass and led the league in interceptions with 11 in 1975. Earlier in his career, Blount was also used as a kickoff returner. He had 36 attempts for 911 yards and a 25.3-yard average. He also recovered 13 opponents' fumbles, two of which he returned for touchdowns.

Blount, who was named the Most Valuable defensive player by the Associated Press in 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1981, was voted All-Pro acclaim. He was also a four-time All-AFC pick and appeared in five Pro Bowls. In a 27–13 victory over the Houston Oilers, his fumble revival in the 1979 AFC Championship Game culminated in the Steelers' winning touchdown. In a 35–31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, a Pittsburgh drive that culminated in a go-ahead touchdown.
