Ernie Holmes Career

Professional career

Holmes was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the eighth round of the 1971 NFL Draft. He and fellow linemen Joe Greene, Dwight White, and L. C. Greenwood were among the legendary Steel Curtain defenses, as well as fellow linemen Joe Greene, Dwight White, and L. C. Greenwood. Although quarterback sacks were not a common NFL statistic until 1982, the Steelers credit Holmes with a career total of 40, eighth on the franchise's all-time list. In 1974, there were 11 players in totality (including a streak of six games without a sack, which ties him with Greene and Greg Lloyd for the longest streak in team history), as well as 10.5 in 1975.

He was adamant on the playing field and was often described as the Steelers' most feared man. Holmes suffered with an emotional breakdown while driving on the Ohio Turnpike on March 16, firing shots at a police helicopter as it pursued him prior to his third season in 1973. He was charged with shooting at a Highway Patrol heli-pilot. Holmes was discovered in a field near his abandoned vehicle in Goshen Township, Mahoning County, Ohio. As convicted, he took his pistol and raised his hands. He was given five years of probation. He was believed to be depressed and experiencing marital problems after being diagnosed with acute neuropathic psychosis.

Holmes spent six seasons with the Steelers before being cut due to on-going weight issues in 1978, when he failed to make the team eligible for the playoffs. He appeared in three games with the New England Patriots before retiring.

Holmes' number 63 was later distributed to All-Pro center Dermontti Dawson. Dawson, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012, has since been officially retired" in honor of him.
