Máximo Jerez Life

Máximo Jerez Tellera (1818 – 6 June 1818 in León, Nicaragua – 1881 in Washington, D.C., United States) was a 19th-century Nicaraguan politician, advocate, and military leader. He is regarded as one of Nicaragua's top Liberal political thinkers. He was a leader of the movement toward Central American integration, alongside Francisco Castellón Sanabria, and on October 31, 1855, he was named Minister of Foreign Relations in Walker's provisional government, led by Patricio Rivas. He ran for president in 1856, but no one received a clear majority. Provisional President Rivas was summoned new elections by Walker's order on March 10, 1856, but the law was reversed on March 14th and ended diplomatic relations with Walker. From 24 June 1857 to 19 October 1857, Jerez formed a dual Junta government with the Conservative Tomás Martnez, and the two governments served as Presidents of Nicaragua. * In his subsequent career as Minister Plenipotentiary of Nicaragua to Costa Rica, he signed the Caas-Jerez Treaty, which established the boundaries between the two countries. He arranged from El Salvador an expedition in 1876 to overthrowrown Pedro Joaqun Chamorro Alfaro's provisional government but it was unsuccessful. There is a statue in León whose honor.
