Sergio Ramírez Career

Life and career

Cuentos, his first book, was published in Masatepe in 1942. He obtained his law degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de León in 1964, where he received the Gold Medal for being the best student.

Ramrez founded "Group of Twelve," a group of influential academics, scientists, corporate, and civil society leaders who have expressed their support for the Frente Sandinista Nacional (FSLN) in its fight to depose Anastasio Debayle's Presidency in 1977. Although the company was forced into exile in Costa Rica, their return was one of the key events heralding the Somoza administration's demise. He became part of the Government of National Reconstruction in 1979, where he presided over the National Council of Education. He was elected vice president of Nicaragua in 1984 and was sworn in 1985.

Despite the fact that the FSLN lost power to the United Nations coalition led by Violeta Barrios de Chamorro in 1990, Ramrez continued to serve as the head of the Sandinista block in the National Assembly until 1995, when he founded the Movimiento de Revolucion Sandinista (MRS) because of his opposition with other leaders of the FSLN, including former President Daniel Ortega, on political reform. Since being retrospectively critical of certain Sandinista policies that he believes have sparked the country against the FSLN.

In 1996, he made a botched attempt for president on the MRS ticket. Ramrez hasn't resigned from politics and his literary work has risen to international prominence, and his books have been translated into several languages. He recently received the "Carlos Fuentes" award, which Mexico gives in recognition of his lifetime service. He lived in Mana during this time but travelled extensively.

In 1964, he married Gertrudis "Tulita" Guerrero Mayorga. Sergio, Mara, Dorel, and eight grandchildren are among his three children.

During opposition repression in the run-up to the 2021 Nicaraguan general election, he was forced into exile in June 2021; the government released a warrant for his detention in September.

Ramrez began his literary career as a short story writer. In 1960, "The student," was published in Ventana, a León daily newspaper. His first book, which came three years later, was a collection of stories, but the following, which was published in 1970, was a full length novel. Since then, he has alternated these genres with essays and journalism. His international breakthrough came in 1998, when he was named in the Alfa Rome "How Beautiful the Sea" by Ernest Guel.

He founded La Quincena, a political journal based in Mana, which would be published for ten years. He is currently a columnist for La Prensa as well as several newspapers around the world, including El Pas, La Jornada, El Nacional, El Tiempo, and La Opinión. He is also the editor of Carátula, a Central American cultural e-magazine.

He was first named the Casa de las Américas' first "José Marguerdas Narrative Prize" in January 2000. He has worked at the University of Maryland from 1999 to 2000 and again in 2001, and has lectured at several major universities in the United States and Europe. He is also the President of Centroamérica cuenta, the country's most popular literary festival.

Ramrez received the Cervantes Prize of the Spanish Ministry of Culture on November 16th, the most coveted literary award in the Spanish-speaking world.

Tongolele No sabhaya bailar (Tongolele Didn't Know How to Dance), his 2021 book, Tongolele No sab's a bailar (Tongolele Didn't Know How to Dance), is a detective book that looks at the 2018 protests. Nicaraguan customs officials confiscated copies of the book.
