George Edward Maxwell Wright (August 2, 1943-June 26, 2019), best known for his role as Willie Tanner on the comedy ALF, was credited as Max Wright.

Early life

Wright was born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 2, 1943. As a boy, he moved to Southfield, graduating from Southfield Senior High School in 1961. While a student at Southfield, he was very involved in the theatre program and had led in two separate musical productions.

Personal life

Wright was married to Linda Ybarrondo from 1965 to her death in 2017 from breast cancer. The couple had two children.

He was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1995 and was largely treated, but he remained in remission until 2019. He died of the disease at the age of 75 at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, New Jersey, on June 26, 2019.

Wright appeared on television shows including WKRP in Cincinnati, and the Norm Show was a regular cast member on Misfits of Science, AfterMASH, Buffalo Bill, and The Norm Show, and Stephen King's made-for-TV version of The Stand. Terry, Central Perk's boss, appeared in the first and second seasons of the sitcom Friends. In the 1998 HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon, he played Günter Wendt. Wright appeared on the sitcom ALF from 1986 to 1990, as Willie Tanner, a typical father of a middle-class family who discovers an alien who has crash-landed on Earth. Despite his best-known role, the actor resentment at his work as a human and the fact that he was a supporting character for a "inanimate object." In a 2000 interview to People, he said, "It was difficult work and really sad." When the program was cancelled in 1990, he was also very glad, according to reports. In the same interview, he said, "I was really keen to have it over with." "There was one take, and Max walked out of the set, collected his bags, headed to his car, and disappeared," Anne Schedeen, his co-star on the show. "Wrap,' and there were no goodbyes," no one had to say. Wright later admitted that as the years came, he looked back on ALF with less animosity and said, "It doesn't matter what I felt or what the days were like, ALF brought people a lot of joy."

Wright had also worked as a stage actor. He appeared in the first performance of The Great White Hope at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., in 1968. He appeared on Broadway in Ivanov, which earned him a Tony nomination, and he played Sir Andrew in Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in 1998. He appeared at the Jewish Ensemble Theatre in Detroit and in the production of No Man's Land at the American Repertory Theater in 2007. In the Park Festival's 2010 production of The Winter's Tale and The Merchant of Venice, he appeared in both The Public Theater's Tale and The Merchant of Venice.
