Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939) is an American rhythm and blues singer, actor, and civil rights activist.

She has performed with her family's band The Staple Singers and also as a solo artist. In 1999 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2017, Staples was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and 2017.

Personal life

In 1964, Staples was briefly married to Spencer Leak; they divorced after Staples decided not to continue playing music but to stay home. She has no children.
