Matty Cash Career

Club career

Cash joined Nottingham Forest in October 2014 after spending 16-months with the FAB Football Academy in Bisham Abbey, Cash had joined FAB after Wycombe Wanderers disbanded him due to financial challenges causing their youth teams to be disbanded, aged 14. He played his first games in professional football on loan at Dagenham & Redbridge in League Two, after signing them on a one-month loan agreement on March 4th. In a 3–1 loss to Hartlepool United on March 12, 2016, he scored his first goal for the Daggers.

Cash agreed to a three-year contract with Forest on August 5th, extending his stay at the club until 2019. He made his first team debut the day after, winning 4–3 over Burton Albion. Cash's early season form earned him accolades, with former Forest defender Kenny Burns saying that his appearances were "putting those of some of the more experienced Forest players "to shame." Cash, on his fifth appearance for Forest, sustained a fractured to his tibia at the start of a 2–2 draw away from Aston Villa on September 11, 2016 causing him to miss three months.

In a 5–2 loss to Barnsley at Oakwell on Friday, Cash recovered from injury as a 79th-minute replacement. Cash was linked with a £5 million trade to Premier League king Chelsea, but Forest owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi denied that the midfielder would be sold in the January transfer window. Cash was the subject of a £6 million bid from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on January 4th, 2017. Cash signed a new deal on March 3rd, extending his current deal with the club until 2021, having remained at Forest until the end of the January transfer window.

Having changed squad numbers from 41 to 14, ankle ligament damage suffered during a pre-season friendly match with Girona deprived Cash of his first match of the 2017-18 season, with the injury affecting the player for "about three months." In a 5–2 win over Queens Park Rangers on February 24, 2018, he scored his first goal for Forest.

In a 2–1 loss to West Bromwich Albion, Cash scored the opening goal for Nottingham Forest in the 2019-2020 season. After injuries to Tendayi Darikwa and later Carl Jenkinson, Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi began to use Cash as a right-back throughout the season. He made the right-back slot his own, and his stellar results led to the Poland national team's successful start to monitor his progress ahead of a potential call-up. In November 2019, he signed a three-and-a-half year contract extension with Forest.

A variety of clubs, including Milan, Everton, and West Ham, were interested in signing cash in January 2020. Cash, on the other hand, said he wanted to stay at Forest until the season's end in the hopes of helping the team win promotion to the Premier League. Jack Grealish of Aston Villa was cited as a reason for the decision.

On August 12, 2020, Forest's Fans were named Player of the Season.

Aston Villa reported on September 3, 2020, that a five-year contract for a reported £14 million had been signed, with the alleged increase to £16 million. In a 1–0 home win over Sheffield United on September 21, Cash made his club debut for the club on September 21, 2020.

In a 3–0 Premier League victory over Everton on September 18, 2021, Cash scored his first goal for Aston Villa. Cash scored a long-range goal in a home victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on February 26, 2022, and was nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month. He was given a yellow card for his achievement, in which Cash pulled his shirt to reveal a note of support for Poland teammate Tomasz Kdziora and his family, who were in Kyiv during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. For March 2022, Cash was named Villa's Player of the Month. Cash signed a five-year contract with Aston Villa on April 4, 2022, amid mounting Atlético Madrid's reported concern.

Cash was named Villa Player of the Season for the 2021-2022 season on May 12, 2022, at Aston Villa's End of Season awards.

International career

His mother was of Polish descent. Cash applied for a Polish passport in September 2021. On October 26, 2021, his request for citizenship was accepted at the Masovian Voivodeship government building in Warsaw. Cash received his first call-up to the Poland national football team for their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary on November 1st. On November 12, he made his first appearance in a 4–1 away win over Andorra. Cash scored his first international goal in a 2–2 away UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands on June 11, 2022.

Revealed: Emiliano Martinez will MISS Aston Villa's Conference League semi-final first leg against Olympiacos after picking up two yellow cards versus Lille despite avoiding red card due to little-known rule

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 19, 2024
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is set to miss the first leg of his side's Europa Conference League semi-final at home to Aston Villa after picking up two yellow cards against Lille. As reported by The Telegraph, Martinez will be suspended despite the fact that he wasn't sent off against Lille due to a little-known rule. Martinez has received his first yellow card of the game for timewasting in the 28th minute.

Lille 2-1 Aston Villa (agg 3-3, 3-4 on pens): Emiliano Martinez's ludicrous antics detract from his enormous talent as keeper's shootout heroics book Europa Conference League semi-final

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 18, 2024
LILLE 2-1 ASTON VILLA (agg 3-3, aet, 3-4 on pens) - TOM COLLOMOSSE IN LILLE: Emi Martinez might be the world's best goalkeeper but the Aston Villa star is also the greatest wind-up merchant on the planet. Martinez's brilliant saves in the penalty shoot-out knocked out Lille and sent Villa to their first European semi-final since 1982. But Goodness me, do we really need the ridiculous antics that go with it? Martinez was booked during the shoot-out - his second of the game after being penalised for running down the clock in the first half. He was not sent off only because yellow cards issued in general play do not carry through when the game reaches penalties. It seems unlikely Martinez knew this rule, given his panicked gestures when referee Ivan Kruzliak approached.

Aston Villa are denied by spectacular double save from Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier in Conference League clash... as Frenchman recovers from initial stop to prevent Douglas Luiz giving visitors the lead in extra time

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 18, 2024
Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier pulled off an incredible double save to deny Aston Villa in their Conference League quarter-final tie. Villa saved their place in the competition with a late aggregate equaliser from Matty Cash, forcing the game into extra time in France with Lille winning 2-1 on the night. The visitors thought they had taken the lead just before the break in extra time when Leon Bailey's effort was parried by Chevalier into the path of Douglas Luiz, but the midfielder's header was spectacularly stopped by the Frenchman.
