Matt Johnson Career

Music career

In 1979, Johnson ran an advertisement in NME urging like-minded followers of the Velvet Underground, the Residents, and Throbbing Gristle to form a band with him. The The The began as a duo, then a quartet, and then into a single entity with a rotating cast of musicians including Johnny Marr, Simon Fisher Turner, and Sinéad O'Connor. In a 1993 Melody Maker interview, Johnson said, "I like to think of The The as a fluid thing." "People can work with me for a while, then take a break and resume work."

Johnson unveiled the album Burning Blue Soul on 4AD under his own name (since re-released under the name The The The The), but some are still regarded as a much forgotten masterpiece. By 1983, the artists signed to Some Bizzare, which is also distributed by CBS. More Bizzare was published by Sony. Some Bizzare recorded and released The Infected, the band's second album, which debuted at number 14 in the UK Albums Chart and remained in the top charts for 30 weeks, making it the band's most commercially profitable album to date. Infected: The Movie was the film accompaniment to the album.

Some Bizzare performed further albums through Sony Music, including Mind Bomb (1989), Dusk (1993), Hanky Panky (1995), and compilation album 45 RPM: The Singles of The The The. (2004).

Eugene, Johnson's younger brother, died in 1989. Matt Johnson's death and his ingenuity are the subject of Johanna St Michaels' 2017 film THE INERTIA VARIATIONS, which focuses on Matt Johnson's life and the team that surround him. The film was named after John Tottenham's original collection of poetry and was later shortlisted for the 'Best Q Film' award in Q magazine's 'Q' Awards.

Despite not releasing any new music as The The The over a period of 15 years, Johnson was a founder and broadcaster of Radio Cineola, and he also worked with his brother Gerard, composing the full soundtrack for two of Gerard's films; Tony (2009) and Hyena (2014).

Johnson co-produced 'We Can't Stop What's Coming' under his own record name Cineola, coincided with the release of The Inertia Variations' in 2017. Johnson devoted this tribute to his late brother Andy Dog Johnson, who died in 2016.

Johnson also released the Radio Cineola Trilogy Boxset on vinyl and CD formats as well as a new single. The Royal Albert Hall, which is part of the British Albert Hall, in October 2017, revealed a comeback series of dates in June 2018 and will be seen live at three venues in London, United Kingdom, including the Royal Albert Hall. In 2018, the The are also scheduled to appear as a headline act at Festival N°6.

In November 2017, Johnson said that he was planning to form a new band and perform new music by 2018.

The The The Tour began in June 2018 and featured not only North America but also four Australian dates in both Sydney and Melbourne.

The original line-up for the tour was:

Earl Harvin was swapped for the Australian leg of the tour by Geoff Dugmore during the course of the tour; only twice.
