Matt Duchene Career

Playing career

Duchene grew up playing minor hockey for the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA)'s Central Ontario Wolves (based in Lindsay) of the Eastern AAA League. He spent his early hockey career with his hometown Haliburton Huskies before moving to AAA. Duchene expressed an interest in college hockey in the United States and verbally committed to playing in the NCAA in 2006. However, Duchene was selected by the Ontario Hockey League's Brampton Battalion in the first round of the 2007 OHL Priority Selection, after the 2006–07 season with the Wolves.

In 2007–08, Duchene was a member of the Brampton Battalion, scoring 30 goals and 50 points in his rookie season. He increased to 79 points in 57 games and 26 points in the playoffs, assisting the Battalion in the J. Ross Robertson Cup Finals, where the Windsor Spitfires, the eventual 2009 Memorial Cup champions, were defeated by the Windsor Spitfires. Duchene attended Turner Fenton Secondary School during his time with the Battalion.

Duchene was ranked second overall among North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau, second behind John Tavares in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Victor Hedman, a Swedish defenceman, was also regarded as a strong candidate with Tavares for the first overall pick. However, Duchene's well-rounded, two-way game drew his interest for the top pick as well. Duchene was selected third overall by the Colorado Avalanche after Tavares and Hedman were selected first and second respectively. Duchene's career as an Avalanche fan quickly became a fan favorite after a video of him pumping his fist after Hedman was drafted second overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning, effectively sealing his destiny as an Avalanche draftee. Duchene sought draft advice from him over the course of the season after being drafted tenth overall in the previous year. Duchene drew comparisons to players like Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic, as well as Mike Richards, when playing in junior.

Duchene scored his first NHL point against the San Jose Sharks on October 1, 2009, with an assist on a powerplay goal by John-Michael Liles. In a 4–3 shootout victory over the Detroit Red Wings earlier this month, Duchene's first goal against Chris Osgood was scored later that month. Duchene would spend the entire season with the Avalanche rather than being reassigned to the Battalion on the following day. In a 3–0 shutout victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on November 30, Duchene scored his first two-goal NHL game in his first two-goal NHL game. In a 6-5 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, he played his second two-goal game and first three-point game. It was the first time an 18-year-old played back-to-back two-goal games in the NHL since Radek Dvod did so with Florida in November 1995. After scoring 5 goals and 8 assists in 14 games, Duchene was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for December 2009.

In a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, Duchene scored the game-winning shootout goal, securing the Avalanche's berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Duchene recorded 55 points on his debut on the Avalanche in scoring, and second in goals with 24 goals. He came in first in points, ahead of John Tavares by a single point, and tied for first in goals with Tavares. The Avalanche were eliminated by the San Jose Sharks in the first round, with Duchene scoring three goals in six playoff games. He was selected to the NHL All-Rookie team and finished third in Calder Memorial Trophy voting, the award given to the NHL's best rookie of the year.

Duchene took part in his first-career match against St. Louis Blues' forward Vladimr Sobotka on November 15, 2010. He was selected to play in his first NHL All-Star Game in January 2011. When Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin threw his stick against Duchene on a breakaway, he became the first player in All-Star Game history to be given a penalty shot. However, Duchene's attempt was turned down by Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers, who refused to assist him. Duchene scored a goal against Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov in a 5–2 loss shortly thereafter on his 100th appearance in NHL history on January 26th. Duchene finished the season with 67 points and became the youngest player in Avalanche history to lead the team in scoring.

In a 7–6 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars on November 4, 2011, Duchene tallied his first hat-trick (and first four-point game) in his first career appearance. Since he played 58 games, injuries dogged his campaign.

Duchene, a restricted free agent, signed a two-year deal with the Avalanche worth $7 million on June 23, 2012. However, Duchene signed his first two-month deal with Frölunda HC of the Elitserien on October 2, 2012, ahead of the 2012–13 NHL lockout. He made his debut against Modo Hockey on October 14th, where he scored with two assists. Duchene's deal with Frölunda will not be extended, and the game-winning goal was scored in his last game in Sweden, beating Linköpings HC. After the game, he received a standing ovation and ended with four goals and 14 points in 19 games. Duchene stayed in Europe on a one-month deal with the option for the remainder of the lock-out, with HC Ambr A of the Swiss National League A. He appeared in four games, scoring five points over the next month with Ambr, whose roster was limited by a Spengler Cup pick. Duchene was farewelled by Ambr fans on January 7, 2013, following a tentative agreement to bring an end to the NHL lockout.

Duchene signed a new five-year, $30 million contract with Colorado on July 18, 2013.

Duchene led a resurgent Avalanche team to a Central Division championship in 2013–2014. With six goals, he continued to lead the team in assists, points, and tied Ryan O'Reilly in game-winning goals. After colliding with teammate Jamie McGinn during a game against the San Jose Sharks on March 31, 2014, the Avalanche reported that Duchene would likely miss four weeks due to a knee injury. Duchene missed the Avalanche's first five 2014 playoff games due to the injury, but she returned to play Games 6 and 7, registering three assists. However, the Avalanche lost in seven games to the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference Quarterfinal series.

Duchene will be the Avalanche's alternate captain for the 2016-17 season, despite the fact that she was on October 13th.

Despite a trade request earlier this year and persistent media rumors, Duchene and the Avalanche began the season together in 2017. Duchene was suspended mid-game against the New York Islanders and traded to the Ottawa Senators as part of the Avalanche's three-team trade with Ottawa and the Nashville Predators on Friday. The Avalanche acquired Sam Girard, Vladislav Kamenev, and a second-round draft pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, as well as Andrew Hammond, Shane Bowers, and first- and third-round picks from the Senators in 2018. Duchene scored 23 goals and 26 assists in 68 games for the Senators.

In the last year of his career, Duchene's career came to an end. He scored 27 goals and 31 assists in 50 games for the Senators.

Duchene was one of several Senators players caught on video in an Uber rapeding Martin Raymond, the country's then-assistant coach. The Uber driver sold the video to a local newspaper, which then published it on November 5th. The video went viral, sparking a minor controversy. Duchene and the other participants also released a statement apologizing for the remarks following the video's release.

Duchene was traded (along with Julius Bergman) to the Columbus Blue Jackets for prospects Vitalii Abramov, Jonathan Davidsson, and conditional first-round draft picks in 2019 and 2020 on February 22, 2019. Columbus acquired Ryan Dzingel, Duchene's ex Senators teammate. In 23 games, Duchene finished the season with 4 goals and 8 assists.

The Blue Jackets qualified for the 2019 playoffs as the Eastern Conference's best wildcard team, defeating the top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in four games before falling to the Boston Bruins in the next round. In ten games, Duchene finished with five goals and five assists.

Duchene signed a seven-year, $56 million contract with the Nashville Predators, worth an annual average of $8 million.

Ryan O'Reilly's Maple Leafs are boosted by the Maple Leafs' new owner, Matt Duchene joins Dallas

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 2, 2023
The usually tumultuous start to NHL free agency seemed less tumultuous than it had been in the past, as a flat cap has resulted in several teams deciding to give players shorter and less contracts. Take 2019 for example - five players have signed contracts with new clubs for a total price tag of $30 million or more. The salary cap was cut by 1 million this season, but it was only increased by $1 million. As a result, there was not a single player who signed with a new team for more than $30 million. Ryan Graves, a defenseman who agreed to a six-year, $27 million contract to join the Penguins, was the closest.
