Career

Martine began her broadcasting career as a graduate student at LBC/IRN in London in 1983. She specialized in parliamentary reporting but she also made radio documentaries, one of which was called Zimbabwe - Five Years After Independence. She also covered the 1985 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which took place in Nassau, Bahamas, among others: Rajiv Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, and Edward Seaga.

She joined BBC World Service radio in New York in 1985, reporting the Iran-Iraq war and interviewing a number of world leaders.

Martine became a presenter, reporter, and producer at BBC Africa, based in London, in 1987. Before 1991, she was an overnight news presenter in South Africa. She worked in South Africa for BBC World Service, reporting South Africa's first democratic election.

Carte Blanche, South Africa's top weekly current affairs feature show programme, was presenter in 1994. Martine returned to London in 1995 to work on current affairs, including Correspondent.

After 20 years at the BBC World News, Martine left the BBC World News in 2014 to join Al Jazeera.

Martine returned from South Africa in 1995 as a reporter for BBC1's Here and Now weekly show. Later, she became BBC World News' top presenter. Tanya Beckett appeared in The World Today first edition in September 2001. She remained the main presenter of The World Today (BBC News at 0500 GMT) until she left the BBC in 2014. She has also appeared on BBC World News in various time slots.

Martine began her new role at Al Jazeera English on February 19, 2014. In comparison to anchoreding regular news bulletins, she delivered Inside Story. In addition, she has had special projects, including interviewing Masoud Barzani about Kurdish independence. After six years with Al Jazeera English in 2020, Martine left the channel in 2020.
