Marquinhos Career

Club career

In 2002, Marquinhos joined Corinthians at the age of eight. He was first drafted in a senior matchday squad in January 2012, but he was left an ineffective substitute in the Campeonato Paulista's 1–0 home win over Linense. On February 18th, he made his professional debut in the sport, winning by the same margin at So Caetano. He made eight appearances across the season as the Timo topped the table in the regular season but was eliminated by Ponte Preta in the play-offs quarter-finals.

Marquinhos made his Campeonato Brasileiro Série A debut on May 20, 2012, losing by 0–1 to Fluminense at the Paulo Machado de Carvalho Stadium; both teams were resting players in the first game of the season due to concentrate on the Copa Libertadores. He appeared in six games in the national championship and was an unused substitute when the club defeated Boca Juniors in the 2012 Copa Libertadores Finals.

Marquinhos was signed by Italian club Roma from Corinthians in July 2012. The transfer was initially a one-year loan with a €1.5 million interest, but after he made eight first-team appearances of at least 45 minutes each, the price increased to €3 million. He played under the banner "Marcos" on his jersey at Roma to prevent any confusion with teammate Marquinho.

Marquinhos made his debut against Bologna 2–3 on September 16th at the Stadio Olimpico, with head Zdenk Zeman bringing Iván Piris on to substitute him for the match's final 15 minutes. Zeman opted to work with former Corinthians teammate and fellow Brazilian Leandro Castán in central defense in October, demoting former starter Nicolás Burdisso to the bench by the replacements' bench. In a 4–2 win over Milan on December 22, he was given a straight red card in a 4–2 victory, when he was found to have denied Stephan El Shaarawy a clear goalscoring opportunity.

In his first season, Marquinhos appeared in 26 Serie A games, four in the Coppa Italia. On May 26, Italy reached the final in full 90 minutes, playing at right back as Roma lost 0–1 to Rome rivals Lazio.

Marquinhos agreed to a five-year contract with French side Paris Saint-Germain for €31.4 million on July 19. This was then the highest transfer fee for a teenager, according to BBC Sport, but Sky Sports announce it as the fifth-highest such transfer, and France's Le 10 Sport records it as the third-highest. After those of Rio Ferdinand, Thiago Silva, Lilian Thuram, and Dani Alves, according to French news channel BFM TV, the move was the fifth most expensive of all time for a defender. Marquinhos' transfer was jeopardized due to anomalies in his medical exam, and he skipped the team's pre-season trip to Sweden. His mother said he had contracted the virus, with PSG denying allegations that he had hepatitis from Le Parisien. Marquinhos scored his first professional goal against Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium on September 17th, the 2013-14 Champions League group stage. Marquinhos made his Ligue 1 debut as a starter against Monaco in a 1–1 draw. In a 2–0 victory over Toulouse on September 28, the club's first league goal was scored. In a 3–0 Champions League group victory over Benfica on October 2, he scored his second goal. Marquinhos, who was playing due to a injury to Thiago Silva, expressed surprise at his PSG goalscoring debut at the start of his career. Marquinhos was the last goal of PSG's 6–1 aggregate victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League's last 16 of the Champions League on March 12, 2014, but the team lost the Coupe de la Ligue final against Lyon on April 19th. He scored the first goal of a 3–1 victory over Lille on May 10th, limiting PSG to a new league point total of 86 with a game remaining to play.

Marquinhos began their 2014-15 campaign in the Trophée des Champions on August 2nd, the entire 90 minutes as PSG defeated Guingamp at the Workers Stadium in Beijing. He gave up a penalty kick by fouling Claudio Beauvue, but Salvatore Sirigu saved Mustapha Yatabaré's penalty shot in the 32nd minute. In a 2–0 victory over Caen on September 24, he scored his first goal of the season, and Javier Pastore's corner will be in his corner. Marquinhos signed a one-year contract extension on March 26, 2015 to keep him on the team until 2019. "The biggest European clubs were interested in signing Marquinhos," the club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said, "This contract extension adds to Paris Saint-Germain's exciting long-term goal." Marquinhos was playing in PSG's 3–2 victory at Marseille in Le Classique, scoring the equalizer as the right-back in an all-Brazilian defense (alongside Maxwell, Thiago Silva, and David Luiz). He started in the 4–0 win over Bastia in the 2015 Coupe de la Ligue, his 34th game without a loss for the club, surpassing a record set by George Weah. PSG secured their third straight league title with a 2–1 victory over Montpellier on May 16th, with Marquinhos in replacement of Yohan Cabaye. With victory over Auxerre in the Coupe de France final two weeks later, he was an unoccupied replacement.

PSG opened the 2015-16 season with a 2–0 win over Lyon in the 2015 Trophée des Champions, with Marquinhos as the only substitute as Serge Aurier played at right back. Chelsea had two bids turned down for his signature at the end of the summer transfer window, ranging from £25.7 million to £40.4 million. Due to the collaboration of his compatriots Silva and David Luiz in the PSG defense center, Marquinhos seldom started during the season. Alex, one of the team's former defensive players, suggested that Marquinhos leave the team because he was in need of big leagues in which he would have the opportunity to play. Silva chastised the team responsing two players of the same team in February 2016, limiting Marquinhos' chances; Silva referred to Barcelona's fascination in the player. Laurent Blanc, the PSG's manager, said he would be able to retire Marquinhos at the end of the season, while agent Giuliano Bertolucci announced that Marquinhos would be leaving.

PSG defeated Saint-Étienne 3-1 in the cup quarter-finals on March 2nd, with Marquinhos scoring his first goal of the season. On the 23th of April, he played the entirety of a 2–1 victory over Lille in the 2016 Coupe de la Ligue Final, defeating Marseille 4–2 as PSG retained all four domestic trophies for the second time in a row.

Marquinhos missed PSG's victory in the 2016 Trophée des Champions in August due to his selection in the Brazil team at the Olympics. Jonathan Johnson, a ESPN writer, had a tipping contest for the season as new boss Unai Emery sold David Luiz back to Chelsea. On February 26, 2017, he scored his first goal of the season; prior to the game, he announced that he was in negotiations for a new deal at the club. He scored the last goal of a 5–0 home victory over title foes Monaco in the Coupe de France semi-finals on April 26, 2014, and he got to know Silva by defeating Angers a month later in the final. Marquinhos said on May 14 that there was a "100 percent" chance he would stay at the club the following season.

Marquinhos began their 2017-18 season on July 29th, after PSG won 2–1 in the 2017 Trophée des Champions at the Grand Stade de Tanger in Morocco, earning 2–1. He scored in the 3–2 semi-final victory over Rennes on January 30, 2018, but was unused in the 3–0 final victory over Monaco, despite young local Presnel Kimpembe's absence. PSG has won all four domestic competitions this season, and Marquinhos told Le Figaro at the end of the season that he will remain at the club.

Marquinhos scored a late equalizer against Atalanta in the Champions League quarterfinals on August 12, sparking a late comeback for PSG to win 2–1. Marquinhos defeated RB Leipzig 3–0 in the semi-finals of the competition on August 18th, the first time in history. PSG eventually lost out 1–0 to Bayern Munich on August 23.

Marquinhos was named as PSG's club captain on September 15, 2020, succeeding Thiago Silva in the role. In a match against Nice five days later, he scored his first goal of the season. In a 3-1 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Marquinhos scored his second goal for PSG on December 2nd.

Marquinhos played his 300th PSG game against Marseille in January 2021, the club's highest-ranked appearance makers of all time.

International career

Marquinhos participated in every minute of Brazil's 2011 South American Under-17 Football Championship as they won and qualified for the World Cup in that segment. Except for one match at that tournament, when the team took fourth place in Mexico, he was an undisputed starter.

Marquinhos, a Portuguese and Brazilian nationality, announced in October 2013 that he would be keen to represent the Portugal national team. Luiz Felipe Scolari named his squad for friendly matches against Honduras and Chile later this month, but he was yet to receive his first call-up for Brazil. On November 17th, he made his international debut against Honduras in Miami, overtaking David Luiz for the final 20 minutes of a 5–0 victory.

Marquinhos competed for Brazil Under-21 at the 2014 Toulon Tournament, winning all five of their matches as the country defeated the tournament. Brazil defeated France 5–2 in the final, with Carlos scoring to lift them 3–2 up.

Marquinhos returned to the senior team in September 2014 after missing the 2014 FIFA World Cup on home soil under new coach Dunga. He appeared in friendly victories over Colombia and Ecuador in Miami, his first match against the latter. Marquinhos was selected in the Brazilian squad for the 2015 Copa América in Chile, his first major international tournament. On June 21, he made his competitive debut and only appearance in the tournament, beating Venezuela in their final group match at the Estadio Monumental David Arellano, transferring Brazil into the quarter-finals as group champions.

Marquinhos was named in Brazil's Copa América Centenario in 2016, a "experimental" pick that was lacking his Paris Saint-Germain defensive partners Thiago Silva and David Luiz in 2016. He appeared in the first two games at centre-back with Gil before being recalled by Miranda for the last group game, a 1–0 loss to Peru that eliminated his squad from contention. Later this year, he was drafted in the team's hosting of the Olympic tournament and scored in a semi-final against Honduras in Rio de Janeiro, winning by 6–0.

Marquinhos captained Brazil for the first time after Silva was injured in a 3–0 victory over Chile at Allianz Parque in his hometown on October 10, 2017. Brazil had already qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and the result ended the continental champions' hopes of qualifying. He was named in Tite's 23-man squad for the final tournament in Russia in May 2018, alongside clubmates Silva and Neymar. In a 5–0 friendly victory over El Salvador on September 11, he scored his first international goal.

Marquinhos was named in Brazil's 23-man squad for the 2019 Copa América on home soil in May 2019. Marquinhos was sent to mark Lionel Messi in the semi-finals against Argentina on July 2nd, but he was suffering from diarrhea. He contributed to Brazil's 2–0 victory over their opponents, but he was forced to leave Miranda in the second half. Marquinhos got off to a 3–1 victory over Peru in the final at the Maracan Stadium on July 7th.

Marquinhos scored his first competitive goal for Brazil on October 9, 2020, beating Bolivia 5–0 at Corinthians' ground in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying. In another qualifier against Venezuela, he earned his 50th cap in a single month.

Marquinhos defeated Venezuela 3–0 in their first group stage match of the 2021 Copa América on June 14, 2021. He started in his country's 1–0 loss to Argentina in the final on July 10th.
