Marshall Clement "Mark" Sanford Jr. (born May 28, 1960) is an American politician and author.
Sanford, a Republican governor of South Carolina and a former member of the United States House of Representatives, is a former governor of South Carolina and a former member of the Senate. From 1995 to 2001, Sanford served as the United States representative for South Carolina's 1st congressional district.
He won the 2002 South Carolina gubernatorial election, defeating Democratic incumbent Jim Hodges.
Sanford served as Governor of South Carolina from 2003 to 2011.
As Governor, he attempted to withhold $700 million in stimulus funds for South Carolina from the federal Recovery Act passed in 2009; however, the South Carolina Supreme Court found that only the state legislature, not the governor, had the power to approve or decline the stimulus funds. Sanford revealed in June 2009 that he had been involved in an extramarital affair after having been absent from the state for several days.

Early life and family
Marshall Clement Sanford Jr. was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Marshall Clement Sanford, a heart surgeon, and Margaret Elise "Peggy" Pitz. His family was well-to-do, but he slept in the same room to save electricity. Sanford and his family migrated from Fort Lauderdale to the 3,000-acre (1,200 ha) Coosaw Plantation near Beaufort, South Carolina, before his senior year of high school. In the Boy Scouts of America, Sanford earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Sanford earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from Furman University in 1983 and a Master of Business Administration degree from Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in 1988.
In November 1989, Sanford married Jenny Sullivan. The couple had four sons.
