Marie Taglioni Life

Marie Taglioni, Comtesse de Voisins (23 April 1804 – 22 April 1884) was a Swedish ballet dancer of the Romantic ballet period, making her a central figure in European dance history.

She was one of the most celebrated ballerinas of the romantic ballet, growing mainly at Her Majesty's Theatre in London and the Théâtre de l'Académie de Musique of the Paris Opera Ballet.

She is credited with (although not confirmed) being the first ballerina to actually dance en pointe.

Early life

Taglioni was born in Stockholm, Sweden, to Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni and Swedish ballet dancer Sophie Karsten, maternal granddaughter of Swedish opera singer Christoffer Christian Karsten and Polish opera singer and actress Sophie Stebnowska. Paul (1808-1944), her brother, was also a dancer and an influential choreographer, and they performed together early in their careers.

Marie Taglioni Career

Career

Taglioni performed in Munich and Stuttgart, and she performed in another ballet choreographed by her father, "La Sicilien" that kick-started her ballet career before joining the Paris Opéra. When Taglioni's father created the ballet La Sylphide (1832) for her, she came to fame as a porteuse at the Paris Opéra. It was the first ballet where dancing en pointe had an artistic purpose rather than simply an athletic spectacle, often involving errant arm movements and exertions, as had been the case with dancers in the late 1820s.
