Antoine Bournonville (19 May 1760 – 11 January 1843) was a French ballet dancer, a choreographer, active in the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Royal Danish Ballet, and eventually as the ballet master in the latter.
He is thought to have played a vital role in the birth of the ballet in Scandinavia.
He was the father of August Bournonville.
Early life
Bournonville was the son of Louis-Amable Bournonville and Jeanne Evrard, who was born as the twin brother of his brother Guillame. He began studying in Noverre in 1769, Paris, and London, before he joined the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm with his sister Julie Alix de la Fay in 1782.
Private life
Bournonville was married first to Danish dancer Mariane Jensen, second to his Swedish housekeeper Lovisa Sundberg (the mother of August Bournonville) and had a child with Danish dancer Karen Olsen.
He died in Fredensborg's Asminder'd Churchyard on January 11th.
Career
Bournonville, Sweden's highest dancer and ballet coach, served until 1792. During his stay in Sweden, he was described as beautiful as Apollo: "His appearance was that of a true Apollo." On top of that, he had a virtuosity in various forms of dance, which he utilised with the highest sense of taste." King Gustav III of Sweden was so excited about his appearance and beauty that he compelled him to untie his hair ribbon so he could see his loose hair fly during his pirouette.
Charlotte Slottsberg, his favorite student and dancing partner in Sweden, was a successful pair in the ballets. It was Antoine Bournonville himself who requested her as his companion after he recognized her talent as an artist and, by his own initiative, gave her a place in Les Meunieres Provencaux, which is considered to be the genesis of Slottberg's true maturity as an artist. Charlotte Slottsberg was said to have been attracted by his beauty, which at one time caused her lover Prince Charles to scream at Bournonville in jealousy.
He worked as an actor, a guitarist, and a choreographer. He wrote Les Meuniers provençaux (1785) and Les Pêcheurs (1789), during his stay in Sweden.
He left Sweden in 1792 after the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden and was employed at the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen, Denmark, following a visiting appearance. Marie Christine Björn was his favorite dance partner in Denmark. He was the ballet master of the Royal Danish Ballet from 1816 to 1823.
