Maria Friedman (born 19 March 1961) is an English actress and producer of stage and film, best known for her work in musical theatre.

She is a seven-time Olivier Award winner, winning three of them.

By Special Arrangement, her first victory was for her 1994 one-woman show.

She has also been named Best Actress in a Musical for the original London productions of Passion and Ragtime.

She is best known for her appearance in EastEnders as Elaine Peacock.

In the 1999 straight to video version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, she also appeared as the narrator.

Early years

Maria Freedman (later Friedman), a concert pianist and guitarist, was born in Switzerland, the niece of Clair Llewelyn (née Sims), a concert pianist, and Leonard Friedman (né Freedman), a violinist for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Sonia Friedman, Sonia Friedman, is her younger sister. Her father is from a Russian Jewish immigrant family, and her mother is English. She began her education in Germany (where her family lived), and after her parents' divorce, she returned with her family to England at the age of five.

She appeared in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Woman in White in 2004 and on Broadway, as Marian Halcombe. She was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer and was forced to have surgery to have the lump removed from the stage as previews for The Woman in White began. She returned to the stage for the previews and appeared on the official opening night less than a week after the surgery. In December 2005, she said she would begin radiation therapy for the cancer. On February 22, 2006, the Broadway show came to a close after only 109 performances, in part due to her and co-star Michael Ball's frequent absences due to sickness. (Friedman planned a six-week absence for additional care, with Judy Kuhn to be her replacement, but the man stayed for the duration of the campaign after the closing was announced.)

Maria appeared in Hey, Mr., as well as other musical performances. The play was in the round. In 2017, she directed a revival of Stepping Out in the West End Valiant Theatre.
