Club career

Cucurella was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, and it was born. He began playing futsal with FS Alella before joining Espanyol's youth teams in 2006 and 2012, and then moved to Barcelona. While a rookie, he made his senior debut with the reserves by beating L'Hospitalet 4–0 in the Segunda División B.

Cucurella made 17 appearances for the team, winning promotion to the Segunda División through the play-offs. He renewed his deal until 2021 on July 7, 2017 with a €12 million clause. He made his professional debut against Granada on September 1st, 2–2 away draw. He made his first-team debut on October 24th, arriving as a late replacement for Lucas Digne in a 3–0 Copa del Rey away victory over Real Murcia. He scored his first senior goal for Barcelona B on March 17, 2018, giving the result a draw away from Lorca.

Cucurella was loaned to fellow La Liga team SD Eibar for one year, subject to a €2 million buyout clause on August 31, 2018. In a 1–0 loss away to Espanyol on September 25, he made his top-flight debut on his first flight. Despite the result, appearing as one of eight changes by boss José Luis Mendilibar, he was lauded by Marca journalist Ander Barroso. On the final day of the season, he scored in a 2–2 draw at home to his parent club.

Eibar converted Cucurella's clause at the end of his loan, making him a permanent player for the Basque team; along with the transfer, Barcelona acquired a €4 million buyback option. After just sixteen days as a permanent Eibar player, this clause was activated on July 16, 2019, only for him to be loaned to Getafe two days later for the upcoming season, with the ability to buy for €6 million and 40% of the rights remaining to Barcelona.

Cucurella made his European debut on September 19th as a replacement for Kenedy in a 1–0 home victory over Trabzonspor in the UEFA Europa League group stage. He appeared in eight games of the campaign, which ended 11 months later with a 2–0 loss on aggregate to Inter Milan in the last 16.

Getafe activated his option to buy for €6 million on March 3rd, so he no longer connecting him to Barcelona. On June 30, the club fully exercised his right to buy.

Cucurella joined Brighton & Hove Albion in Premier League on a five-year deal on August 31, 2021. On September 11, he made his Brighton debut and played 82 minutes before being withdrawn in the 1–0 away victory over Brentford. He made his home debut eight days later by winning the whole game over Leicester City. Danny Welbeck's headed equalizer in added time after being 1–1 away from Chelsea on December 29. He scored his first goal for the club on May 7th, 2022; he scored the second of a 4–0 win over Manchester United by shooting from Leandro Trossard's pull back. Cucurella received Players' Player of the Season awards three days later, as well as being named Player of the Season.

Cucurella signed Chelsea's Cucurella on a six-year deal on August 5th, 2022. The fee was estimated to be worth an initial £55 million, potentially increasing to £62 million in add-ons, which was a record fee collected by Brighton. In a 1–0 away victory over Everton in the Premier League on August 6, he made his Premier League debut as a substitute.

International career

In a 2–1 victory over Venezuela in Girona on March 25, Cucurella debuted as a substitute for the non-FIFA Catalonia team. He was one of many new faces for the game due to several clubs not releasing their players.

Cucurella was called up to the senior Spain squad for UEFA Nations League games against Switzerland and Germany in November 2020, despite José Gayà's illness. He did not leave the bench for the games.

Following Sergio Busquets' positive COVID-19 exam, Spain's under-21 squad was called up to the international friendly against Lithuania on June 8-2021. Cucurella made his senior debut in the match when Spain defeated 4–0.

Cucurella was a member of the Spain under-23 team that captured the silver medal at the 2020 Olympic Games, which took place in 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic postponement had occurred in 2021.
