Ali was born in Oakland, California, on February 16, 1974, the son of Willicia Goines (born 1957) and Phillip Gilmore (1956–1994). He was raised as a Christian in Hayward, California by his mother, an ordained Baptist minister whose mother, Evie Goines, was also anordained minister in Hayward Baptist Church.
