Maggie De Block Career

Early life and career

Maggie Celine Louise De Block was born in Merchtem, Province of Brabant, on April 28th, 1962 (present-day Flemish Brabant). She was the first of three children born to Jan De Block, who worked with the Belgian railway company NMBS/SNCB. After her first brother was born, her mother became a housewife to care for the children. Maggie was seven years old when her father was killed in a car crash. Maggie's second brother, who they named Jan after their father, was born five months later.

In Laeken, De Block attended Koninklijk Lyceum (now Lyceum Martha Somers Brussel). She studied medicine at Vrije Universiteit Brussel after her graduation. De Block married Luc Asselman, who was still a student in 1982. They have two children. She began training as a family doctor.

Political career

De Block, a member of the Vlaamse Liberal Party, a member of the socialist Party, was also named VLD in 1999. She was elected Member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the electoral district Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde during the 2014 elections.

She served as Secretary of the Chamber of Representatives for four years after the 2004 election. De Block served as Chairman of the Infrastructure Committee in 2010 and 2011 until the following year. In the newly formed Di Rupo government, De Block was chosen to be Secretary of State for Asylum, Immigration, and Social Integration. She assumed Asylum, Immigration, and Social Integration as Secretary of State for Asylum, Immigration, and Social Integration, as part of the Federal Government on December 6th.

De Block became the vice chair of the Open VLD party in December 2012. Readers of La Libre Belgique's francophone newspaper La Libre Belgique voted her Woman of the Year in March 2013. She became the most popular Flemish politician in 2013 and 2014, ahead of Flanders Minister Kris Peeters.

In July 2014, De Block became Minister of Justice, charged with Asylum, Social Integration, and Poverty Reduction in the Di Rupo Government.

De Block, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Health in October 2014. She described the portfolio as "her passion" on the oath. Critics have stated that she does not lead by example as Health Minister due to her obesity, and she has replied, "I know I'm not a model, but not the packaging."

De Block was instrumental in coordinating the Belgian response to the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa during her tenure as Minister. In 2015, she led a joint effort between Belgium and the Netherlands to discuss the purchase of drugs for rare diseases with pharmaceutical companies. She signed a royal decree in June 2015 authorizing certain uses of medical cannabis, although Sativex oral spray for multiple sclerosis was only available at the time.

De Block, Belgium's most influential politician by 2015, was the most influential politician in Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels.

The strategic reserve of FFP2 masks was destroyed in 2018 under De Block's leadership as health minister, because of being out of date and not replenished. She said she did not refill them in order to save taxpayer money. During the COVID-19 pandemic, mask shortages made Belgium one of Europe's most impacted countries.

In Belgium, De Block decided to begin selling plain packaging for all tobacco products in September 2018.

De Block was announced on December 9, 2018, replacing Theo Francken. She served in a previous administration. Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, as well as Asylum Policy and Migration were among her official roles in the Michel II government and the succeeding Wilmès administration.

De Block oversaw the government's response during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Belgium. She called for European Union countries to be "united" in the production of protective face masks in May 2020. She expressed disappointment with the lack of greater coordination with Belgium's neighbors, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, as a "significant worry" in July 2020.

De Block was not re-appointed to the government led by Alexander De Croo and instead became a permanent member of the Belgian Parliament.
