David S. Schweikert (born March 3, 1962) is an American businessman and member of the United States House of Representatives from Arizona, and has been serving since 2011.
He is a member of the Republican Party.
Schweikert currently serves Arizona's 6th congressional district, which includes the majority of northern Phoenix as well as Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Cave Creek.
He served in the 5th District from 2011 to 2013. Schweikert served two terms in the Arizona State House of Representatives (1991–2004), was chairman of the state Board of Equalization (1995–2004), and was the elected treasurer of Maricopa County (2004–2007).
Schweikert ran for the House of Representatives twice (losing a primary to J. D. Hayworth in 1994 and losing a general election to incumbent Harry Mitchell in 2008) before winning the election for the first time in 2010. Schweikert and his chief of staff, Oliver Schwab, were charged with misconduct in 2018.
Early life and education
Mary Lynn Sheridan, an unwed teenage mother, was born in Los Angeles, California. Sheridan had considered an abortion but decided against placing him for adoption, according to Schweikert. He and his two adopted children and two adopted siblings grew up in Scottsdale. He graduated from Sabaro High School in 1980, followed by a Bachelor of Science degree in finance and real estate in 1985, as well as an MBA from Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business.
Personal life
Joyce and Schweikert, along with his wife, live in Fountain Hills, Arizona. In 2015, they adopted an infant daughter.
Early career
Schweikert was elected to the Arizona State House of Representatives in 1990 and re-elected in 1992. He appeared in Fountain Hills and a small Scottsdale suburb. In his second term, he became a committee chair as a freshman and majority whip.
Schweikert was elected chair of the Arizona State Board of Equalization, a full-time position, where he served from 1995 to 2003. He was tasked with the oversight of billions of dollars in appraisals and tax protests from Arizona residents and businesses as chair. In 1999, there was rumors that Arizona Governor Jane Dee Hull might have penned him to the Arizona Corporation Commission.
Schweikert was appointed Chief Deputy Treasurer of Maricopa County in 2004 and elected Treasurer the same year. In 2007, he resigned to run for Congress anew.
