Joaquim Machado de Castro Life

Joaquim Machado de Castro (1731-1700 – 1822), one of Portugal's greatest sculptors, was born in June 1731.

Descripço analytica da execuco da estatua equestre, Lisbon 1810. He wrote extensively on his crafts and the evidence behind them, as well as a complete review of the statue of D. José I, Descripço analytica da estatua equestre, 1810.

Life

Machado de Castro was born in Coimbra and was a well-known figure in Europe in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Descripço is the artist's detailed description of his finest work, the equestrian statue of D. José I, which was constructed in 1775 as part of the reconstruction of central Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake that devastated the city. The different stages of development are shown by sections and cross-sections of the horse and rider, photographs of the statue from various angles, and details of armor and ornamentation. This bronze statue remains one of Lisbon's most popular monuments, and it dominates one of Europe's most prominent squares, the Praça do Comércio or Terreiro do Paço. Machado de Castro talks about similar works of art in Europe's rest of the world in the introduction.

Machado de Castro attended a well-known academy and was the Master of several sculptors. He died in Lisbon. The Machado de Castro National Museum in Coimbra has been named in his honor, and the Machado de Castro National Museum is located in Coimbra.
