M. Nasir Life

Datuk Mohamad bin Mohamed (born 4 July 1957) is a Singaporean-Malaysian poet, singer-songwriter, engineer, producer, actor, and film director.

Early life

M. Nasir was born in Bukit Panjang, Colony of Singapore, on July 4, 1957 (modern-day Singapore). He is the fourth of nine siblings. Mohamed Sam, his father, hailed from Pagoh Muar in Johor, and emigrated to Singapore. He served as a firefighter in the Singapore Fire Department, but Esah Yahya, a housewife with a keen interest in Prophet Muhammad's life and studies in Arabic, has been an ongoing fascination. After Singapore was evicted from Malaysia in 1965, his family decided to apply for Singaporean citizenship. Nasir began his studies at the Boys Town Vocational Institute early in his life. In 1978, he attended the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and graduated with a diploma in Western painting, originally intending to be an artist.

Personal life

Nasir and his family immigrated to Malaysia in 1984, where he became a naturalised citizen in 1989.

On September 12, 1981, Junainah Johari, the lead singer of Singapore's oldest girl group, married her. They had five children before, including Ilham, Yasin, Hidayat, Syafi'i, and Nurnilam Sari, died on August 8th, 1998 due to asthma. Nasir's second marriage, which came not long after, was with actress Marlia Musa, and the two children have a daughter named Suci Musalmah.

His children are also interested in music making: Ilham, Yasin, and Hidayat make up the band Pitahati, while Syafi, a member of the psychedelic rock band Ramayan, are among the participants.

Mohamed Sam, his father, died on January 28th 2021 at the age of 96. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Nasir was unable to return to Singapore to attend his father's funeral.

M. Nasir Career

Career

M. Nasir had been heavily exposed to music, not only from the radio, but also through his elder brother, who had bought Bob Dylan, Queen, Al Stewart, and Led Zeppelin as they were growing up in Singapore in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1978, he was introduced to music by a friend of his Wan Ibrahim, later executive producer of PolyGram Singapore, who were gaining in fame at the time.

Nasir decided to try singing after launching his debut album Untuk Pencinta Seni in 1979 under the name of Mohamad MN, which turned out to be a flop. With A. Ali, S. Sahlan, and siblings Abby and Eddie Ali, he began to form Kembara in 1981. The Ali siblings, on the other hand, were left in the group's infancy due to differences on selecting the band's genre.

Kembara's self-titled debut album was a commercial success with 25,000 copies sold. The band went on to record six albums before disbanding in late 1985.

Nasir went solo after Kembara was disbanded. S.O.L.O.O.L.O. under PMC/BMG in 1989, he released his second solo album, S.O.L.O. This was his first solo album in ten years since Untuk Pencinta Seni (1979), and it was the first to be registered under his new name. He appeared on five more solo albums, including Saudagar Mimpi (1992), Canggung Mendonan (1993), Srikandi Cintaku (1999), Phoenix Bangkit (2001), and Sang Pencinta (2006), all of which became commercial success. Despite Nasir's announcement that he would debut an 8th studio album, it did not appear.

He also dabbles in painting, particularly abstract art. He has held several exhibitions on his canvas paintings; the first being Tanda in 2014 and Tanda II in 2015, both in Shah Alam.
