Life and career

Ward was born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, and graduated from St. Malachy's Memorial High School in 1959 and 1963, then St. Thomas University, which was located in Miramichi, New Brunswick, before relocating to Fredericton in 1964.

Tad Schotz appeared on the first episode of Laverne & Shirley as Tad Schotz, but he is best known for playing Ferris Bueller's father in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). Ward appeared as Jim Walsh in the show Beverly Hills, 90210, in 1990. Later, producers recast the role and cut him and reshot with James Eckhouse. In 2001, he made a cameo appearance in the film Not Another Teen Movie as Mr. Wyler, spoofing his appearance in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Ward also served as John, one of the marketers, in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987) as John.

In 1985, Lyman Ward and Sandra Bogan, a Second City actor, met together. Ward met Cindy Pickett on the set of Ferris Bueller, where they starred the teenager protagonist in the 1986 film. They married in real life, had two children together, and then divorced shortly after being the parent of the teen protagonist in the 1992 film Sleepwalkers.

In 2016, Ward wrote Fortune's Tide, a historical romance set in his hometown of Saint John.

He appears in both films and television.
