Playing career

Glendening started playing hockey in his hometown, East Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was varsity football at East Grand Rapids High School for four years and was their top scorer for two years out of the four years. He completed his time at The Hotchkiss School for one year. Glendening played four seasons (2008—2012) of NCAA college hockey with the Michigan Wolverines prior to turning pro.

Glendening served as an alternate captain for Michigan during his sophomore season. Glendening scored seven goals and 14 assists in 45 games. The Wolverines dropped to seventh place in the CCHA, but they won the 2010 CCHA men's ice hockey tournament and earned a NCAA tournament spot. In the NCAA Midwest Regional Final, Michigan defeated Bemidji State and then lost in double overtime to Miami, 3–2.

In his junior year, Glendening was a captain for Michigan, as well as Carl Hagelin. He was one of six Wolverines to play in all 44 games, with eight goals and ten assists. After a surprise loss to Western Michigan in the CCHA semifinals, Michigan finished first in the CCHA and was given an at-large invitation to the NCAA tournament. The Wolverines swept Nebraska-Omaha and Colorado College to win the NCAA West Regional and then defeated North Dakota 2–0 to advance to the Frozen Four championship game; losing 3–2 to Minnesota-Duluth in overtime.

Glendening was a captain for Michigan in his senior year, scoring a career-high 10 goals and 11 assists in 41 games. After losing to the Broncos in the CCHA Championship Game, the Wolverines tied for second place in the CCHA with Western Michigan and received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. In the regional semifinals, Cornell defeated Michigan 3–2 in overtime.

The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) announced Glendening as a free agent on a one-year deal on June 19, 2012. Glendening played 51 regular-season games with the Griffins in the AHL, as well as 27 games with the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL, where he was selected to play in the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game, but was unable to attend because he had been transferred to the AHL. Glendening played 24 post-season games with Grand Rapids, scoring 16 points to help the Griffins win their first Calder Cup championship.

The Detroit Red Wings signed Glendening to a one-year, two-way contract on July 5, 2013. Glendening made his NHL debut in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers on October 12, 2013. The Detroit Red Wings announced Glendening to a three-year contract extension on April 5, 2014. Glendening scored his first NHL goal against the Montreal Canadiens' Carey Price on Wednesday night. Glendening set a franchise record for the most games played without a goal at 52 games, beating Cummy Burton, who appeared in his entire 43-game Detroit career without scoring a single goal.

The Red Wings extended Glendening's contract extension to four years on July 14, 2016. Glendening appeared in his 500th NHL game for the Red Wings on March 10, 2020, becoming the first undrafted player to do so for Detroit since the NHL went to a seven-round draft in 2005.

Glendening left the Red Wings as a free agent in his eighth season with the Dallas Stars on July 28, 2021, following his three-year deal, he was signed by the Dallas Stars to a two-year, $3 million contract.
