Lucy Speed Career

Career

She designed clothes for Kays' catalog and went on to work in Sunpat peanut butter commercials, then for gas, paint, soup, and the children's Toy My Little Pony. She was on stage at London's National Theatre in Neap Tide by the age of eight, a controversial play about lesbianism and women's oppression. "Mum wasn't keen for me to be a child actor," Speed said, "I thought she'd be even more precocious than I already was."

Speed appeared in many films during her youth, including in the 1989 film Scoop as Josephine Stitch, which included appearances as an eleven-year-old girl. She went on to win the role of 'young Aurora' in the film Impromptu (1991), which was about Polish pianist Frédéric Chopin and starring Hugh Grant.

When Speed filmed at Windsor Safari Park with television presenter Johnny Morris, she made a good show on television. She went on to appear in a court drama called Rumpole of the Bailey in 1987, as Isolde Erskine-Brown), and then appeared in a rendition of Saracen in 1989. She appeared in the award-winning Dodgem in 1991 alongside actor Sean Maguire. Dodgem, a six-part televised drama for children's BBC that was written and adapted by Bernard Ashley. Rose Penfold, a streetwise love interest in Maguire's character, Simon; they met at a children's house and then rushed away to be together.

Beki Jenner appeared in two Rides, a BBC drama about an all-woman minicab company written by Carole Hayman, during 1992-93. She appeared in a 1994 episode of BBC children's programme Parallel 9, which aired in 1994.

When she first appeared in the BBC soap EastEnders in 1993, she was rewarded for her first television appearance. In January 1994, she appeared on screen as Bianca Jackson's brow beat best friend (played by Patsy Palmer). Speed resigned from the soap after a year as she became overwhelmed and unprepared by all of the national attention she received from participating in such a high-profile event. "I was extremely worried by it and certainly unprepared for it," Speed explained. I didn't like at all the buzz that came with being on such a high-profile show. All the craziness was that it wasn't what I signed up for in the first place. I was very young and shy, so it all became a challenge for me...I respected my first one-year deal and then moved forward...they expressed an interest in me for another year, but I politely declined. They were a little shocked. I tried to explain in the best way I could understand my reasons for leaving at the end of my term, which they eventually understood, and I kept in good company with them...I had some growing up to do and knew that growing up more or less in front of the British public for one year was enough."

However, Natalie Price's role in 1999 was revived four years after she first appeared in this role four years ago. Ross Kemp, her co-star with EastEnders, was the catalyst for her return, and she and producer Matthew Robinson were introduced. "I have changed," Speed said. I've grown up and I'm more confident. I've had more life experiences than I can remember. I've had bad times and lived in several countries. Now that I'm a bit more grown up and settled, I'm a bit more settled. And as I've aged, I'm sure it's much more convenient to have a regular job. "Cool, I can pay the mortgage," I thought as EastEnders asked me back.

In 2004, Speed decided to leave the soap box once more. "I'd been back for five years and had little to do the year before," she said. I love being active, and I could see the scriptwriters struggling with Natalie and where to place her, so it seemed like the right time to start. It's good that they've left it open, but I'd hate to believe the door was locked behind me. Absolutely, I'd like to go back, but never say never."

Nell Gwyn was played in England, My England, 1995, in a film about composer Henry Purcell. She appeared in the films Metroland (1997), Keep the Aspidistra Flying (1997), and the Academy Award-winning film Shakespeare in Love (1998).

She appeared in BBC drama Dangerfield, BBC comedy Men Behaving Badly, An Unsuitable Job for a Woman, hospital drama Casualty, and Robin Hood's New Adventures were shot in Lithuania. Unsolved Mysteries, a television show in the United States, also served on a television series called Unsolved Mysteries. She appeared in the BBC hospital drama Holby City in 2004, the Detective series Jericho in 2005, and in 2007, she filmed for the second series of the BBC comedy Love Soup. DC/DS Stevie Moss, from series 24 in 2008 to the final episode in August 2010, was faster back in The Bill.

Speed has appeared in television game shows since being away from acting. These include Celebrity Ready, Steady, Cook, and Celebrity Weakest Link hosted by Anne Robinson, and Pointless Celebrities partnered her former EastEnders husband Shaun Williamson on her on-screen husband. Speed pioneered the first self-defense DVD, "Stay Safe With Lucy Speed," in 2007. Special forces and "martial arts guru" Andy Hopwood appear on the DVD, which also teaches various self-defense techniques.

Speed has appeared in stage and radio shows. She appeared in Be My Baby at London's Soho Theatre in 2000, portraying Queenie, a four-month pregnant singer. She appeared in the Louise Roche play/musical Girls' Night in 2004 and 2006, which toured the United Kingdom, and in 2005 she appeared in the Louise Monologues. Five friends are reliveding their experiences at a karaoke night, according to the comedy play. Speed was one of many former soap actors to appear in the Royal Theatre's Soap parody of TV soap operas written by Sarah Wood in 2007. Paul Fox of Coronation Street, Emmerdale's Janice McKenzie, and EastEnders' Marc Bannerman appeared in the film. She appeared in the Radio 4 series Elephants to Catch Eels in 2003, along with former Coronation Street actor John Bowe, and she was a member of Silver in the radio game, Speed and Silver. Stella Pryor, the Archers' playing farm manager, joined her in 2022.
