Louise Mensch Life

Louise Daphne Mensch (née Bagshawe; born 28 June 1971) is a British blogger, author, and former Conservative Member of Parliament.

Louise Bagshawe, her maiden name, became well-known in the 1990s as a writer of chick lit books.

She was elected Conservative MP for Corby in the 2010 UK general election and moved to New York City to live with her second husband, American music manager Peter Mensch.

She began working with News Corporation in 2014 and co-launched its Heat Street website in February 2016.

Since leaving Heat Street in December 2016, she has concentrated on her blog Patribotics, which she started in January 2017, as well as her Twitter account.

In March 2017, she left News Corp completely.

Mensch, as well as her website Heat Street, have published numerous unverified claims and spread hoaxes and conspiracy theories about the Trump administration and its Russian Federation connections, leading to her dismissal as a conspiracy theorist.

Early life

Louise Daphne Bagshawe was born in Westminster, London, daughter of Nicholas Wilfrid Bagshawe and Daphne Margaret (Triggs) Bagshawe, and was raised a Roman Catholic. Her father is descended from the Recusant (Catholic) Bagshawe family of Wormhill Hall, near Buxton, Derbyshire, and of Oakes-in-Norton. She was educated at Beechwood Sacred Heart School, Tunbridge Wells, and Woldingham School, a Catholic girls' boarding school in Surrey. She studied English Language and Literature at Christ Church, Oxford, and she was Secretary of the Oxford Union. She has a brother and two sisters, one of whom, Tilly Bagshawe, is a freelance journalist and writer.

Personal life

She married Anthony LoCicero, an Italian-American real estate developer. They have three children, but they separated in 2009 and later divorced. She married American music manager Peter Mensch, who she first met 20 years ago, in June 2011 and lived with him in New York City until their divorce in August 2019.

Mensch revealed in May 2016 that she had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which made her realize she was "self medicating" with wine for anxiety, and has consequently stopped drinking alcohol almost entirely.

Mensch also discussed on BBC TV's Question Time during a discussion on the right to decriminalise hard drugs, using hard drugs in her twenties, and then told the world: It's something I regret terribly, that I messed with my brain in my youth. "We all do stupid stuff when we are young," I said. It has had long-term mental health effects on me. Since taking hard drugs, my brain is all messed up.

Louise Mensch Career

Political career

Mensch joined the Conservative Party when she was 14 years old; her parents supported the party. She shifted to the Labour Party in 1996, saying she feared Tony Blair to be "socially democratic but an economic Tory." She returned to the Conservatives in 1997, 2001, and 2005 general elections, assisting her mother Daphne in her election to East Sussex County Council from the Liberal Democrats. Mensch co-founded the Oxonian Society in 2001 and later renamed the Hudson Union Society, alongside Joseph Pascal and Princess Badiya bint El Hassan of Jordan.

In 2006, Conservative Party leader David Cameron named Mensch on his "A-List" of Conservative candidates. In October 2006, she was chosen to stand in Corby's constituency, which she won with a majority of 1,951, defeating Labour incumbent Phil Hope at the 2010 general election. She was chosen by other Conservative MPs in June 2010 to serve on the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport's Select Committee.

Mensch interviewed James and Rupert Murdoch regarding their involvement in the World phone hacking controversy on July 19, 2011.

Bagehot, a political blogger, cited Mensch as the "surprise star" of the hearing, writing that her "sharp, concrete, scornful questions" contrasted with her "waffling, pompous" fellow committee members and her sympathetic defense of the Murdochs.

Mensch erroneously stated that Piers Morgan had written in his autobiography about phone hacking while he was editor of the Daily Mirror, according to the investigators. Mensch cited the safety of parliamentary privilege when confronted on CNN by Morgan, who denied to deny or repeat it. She later apologised to Morgan and claimed she had misread a newspaper article about his book.

Mensch was sent an email three days after the fact that she had discovered, among other things, that she had taken heroin and danced while inebriated with violinist Nigel Kennedy at a Birmingham club in the 1990s. Mensch wrote an email stating that the charges were "highly likely," but that she regretted only that others were required to see her dancing and that she would not be banned from asking further questions about phone hacking. Members of the Parliamentary committee condemned the attempt to intimidate Mensch, who later revealed in The Sunday Times that she had used class A drugs.

Mensch resigned as Corby's MP in order to relocate with her second husband, American music manager Peter Mensch, to New York City on August 6, 2012. In the impending September government reshuffle, Mensch seemed to be promoted. Crown Steward and Bailiff of Manor of Northstead was ordained on the 29th of August 2012, vacating her seat.

Following the 2011 England riots, Mensch ordered that social media channels Twitter and Facebook be shutdown or "take an hour off" during disruptions to prevent the propagation of fake rumors that are wasting police funds. During emergencies, she likened the situation to brief interruptions to road and rail links. However, some other Twitter users compared such activity to internet censorship of regimes like Iran and China, while Sussex police said they had used Twitter to avoid rumors.

A man was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison for sending Mensch an offensive and threatening email containing threats against her children in June 2012. Mensch called for anonymity to determine the threat the perpetrator was unaware of, while the bullies believed they should do as they pleased without fear of retaliation.

Mensch slammed threatening tweets she had received in May 2012, calling them "misogyny and bullying" on her Twitter account. The tweets were later revealed in the mainstream press, and she drew praise and admiration from Twitter followers for bringing attention to the issue, as well as from public figures such as Jeremy Vine and Isabel Hardman.

Mensch herself was accused of cyberbullying Abby Tomlinson, the teen leader of the 'Milifandom' in May 2015.' "John Prescott, a former Labour Party deputy leader, said the Guardian that "Human's conduct violated the Independent Press Standards Organisation's code on discrimination," the Guardian announced at the time. Mensch said she would delete several of her tweets "as I do not want to be accused of 'harrassing.' Mensch denied the allegations, arguing that she had only criticized Tomlinson. She wrote a 4,000-word blog post shortly thereafter to clarify that she had not bullied Tomlinson and made new claims about the sixth-form student.

Mensch is said to have assaulted a number of people who have questioned the veracity of the numerous conspiracy theories she has posted about Russia. Mensch, according to the Daily Beast, has "resorted to ad hominem attacks on those with whom she disagrees," the website said, "notably accusing Naval Reserve intelligence officer and former FBI double agent Naveed Jamali of disseminating "what can only be described as pro-Kremlin propaganda." Mensch expressed surprise on Twitter when Jamali's assertion that the Russians did not recruit top-secret leaker Edward Snowden "as Mensch has stated" and that they weren't even aware that he was on the level."
