Political career
Mensch joined the Conservative Party when she was 14 years old; her parents supported the party. She shifted to the Labour Party in 1996, saying she feared Tony Blair to be "socially democratic but an economic Tory." She returned to the Conservatives in 1997, 2001, and 2005 general elections, assisting her mother Daphne in her election to East Sussex County Council from the Liberal Democrats. Mensch co-founded the Oxonian Society in 2001 and later renamed the Hudson Union Society, alongside Joseph Pascal and Princess Badiya bint El Hassan of Jordan.
In 2006, Conservative Party leader David Cameron named Mensch on his "A-List" of Conservative candidates. In October 2006, she was chosen to stand in Corby's constituency, which she won with a majority of 1,951, defeating Labour incumbent Phil Hope at the 2010 general election. She was chosen by other Conservative MPs in June 2010 to serve on the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport's Select Committee.
Mensch interviewed James and Rupert Murdoch regarding their involvement in the World phone hacking controversy on July 19, 2011.
Bagehot, a political blogger, cited Mensch as the "surprise star" of the hearing, writing that her "sharp, concrete, scornful questions" contrasted with her "waffling, pompous" fellow committee members and her sympathetic defense of the Murdochs.
Mensch erroneously stated that Piers Morgan had written in his autobiography about phone hacking while he was editor of the Daily Mirror, according to the investigators. Mensch cited the safety of parliamentary privilege when confronted on CNN by Morgan, who denied to deny or repeat it. She later apologised to Morgan and claimed she had misread a newspaper article about his book.
Mensch was sent an email three days after the fact that she had discovered, among other things, that she had taken heroin and danced while inebriated with violinist Nigel Kennedy at a Birmingham club in the 1990s. Mensch wrote an email stating that the charges were "highly likely," but that she regretted only that others were required to see her dancing and that she would not be banned from asking further questions about phone hacking. Members of the Parliamentary committee condemned the attempt to intimidate Mensch, who later revealed in The Sunday Times that she had used class A drugs.
Mensch resigned as Corby's MP in order to relocate with her second husband, American music manager Peter Mensch, to New York City on August 6, 2012. In the impending September government reshuffle, Mensch seemed to be promoted. Crown Steward and Bailiff of Manor of Northstead was ordained on the 29th of August 2012, vacating her seat.
Following the 2011 England riots, Mensch ordered that social media channels Twitter and Facebook be shutdown or "take an hour off" during disruptions to prevent the propagation of fake rumors that are wasting police funds. During emergencies, she likened the situation to brief interruptions to road and rail links. However, some other Twitter users compared such activity to internet censorship of regimes like Iran and China, while Sussex police said they had used Twitter to avoid rumors.
A man was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison for sending Mensch an offensive and threatening email containing threats against her children in June 2012. Mensch called for anonymity to determine the threat the perpetrator was unaware of, while the bullies believed they should do as they pleased without fear of retaliation.
Mensch slammed threatening tweets she had received in May 2012, calling them "misogyny and bullying" on her Twitter account. The tweets were later revealed in the mainstream press, and she drew praise and admiration from Twitter followers for bringing attention to the issue, as well as from public figures such as Jeremy Vine and Isabel Hardman.
Mensch herself was accused of cyberbullying Abby Tomlinson, the teen leader of the 'Milifandom' in May 2015.' "John Prescott, a former Labour Party deputy leader, said the Guardian that "Human's conduct violated the Independent Press Standards Organisation's code on discrimination," the Guardian announced at the time. Mensch said she would delete several of her tweets "as I do not want to be accused of 'harrassing.' Mensch denied the allegations, arguing that she had only criticized Tomlinson. She wrote a 4,000-word blog post shortly thereafter to clarify that she had not bullied Tomlinson and made new claims about the sixth-form student.
Mensch is said to have assaulted a number of people who have questioned the veracity of the numerous conspiracy theories she has posted about Russia. Mensch, according to the Daily Beast, has "resorted to ad hominem attacks on those with whom she disagrees," the website said, "notably accusing Naval Reserve intelligence officer and former FBI double agent Naveed Jamali of disseminating "what can only be described as pro-Kremlin propaganda." Mensch expressed surprise on Twitter when Jamali's assertion that the Russians did not recruit top-secret leaker Edward Snowden "as Mensch has stated" and that they weren't even aware that he was on the level."
