Early life
Lisa Anne Haapaniemi was born in Houston, Texas, and she and her father, Edmund, were the only two children born to Edmund, a Red Cross worker, and Karin Haapaniemi, a registered nurse. Niemi has said that her father and her mother's careers were the source of her inspiration and encouragement. She is of Finnish ancestry. In 1974, she graduated from the Houston Ballet Dance Company. In 1977, she changed her surname from Haapaniemi to Niemi for her company name.
Personal life
Niemi was 14 years old when she first joined the Houston Ballet Dance Company, and Patrick Swayze was a patron and director; the two eventually married when she was 19 years old. Niemi and Swayze were married on June 12, 1975, and they remained married until Swayze's death from pancreatic cancer on September 14, 2009. The couple migrated to New York City shortly after we married and began to pursue their dance careers until the late 1970s, when they relocating to Los Angeles, California. They operated a building company and raised horses together, in addition to dancing and filmmaking. There were no children in the Swayzes.
