Evelyn Hart Career

Life and career

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Hart studied dance at the Dorothy Carter School of Dance in London, Ontario, Canada, and then at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. Hart auditioned for The National Ballet School of Canada in Toronto, Ontario, before attending the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She was accepted for her preliminary summer session of auditioning for admission as a student in the year's rigorous academic/professional training program, where students train for the National Ballet of Canada. Hart did not gain a spot at the National Ballet School for the school year, mainly due to her anorexia nervosa. Hart battled with this pathological eating disorder before returning to ballet, re-training, and winning a scholarship for herself at The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. In 1976, she joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet company as a soloist and then principal dancer in 1979.

She was the first Canadian woman to win gold at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 1980, choreographed by Norbert Vesak.

Hart appeared in Moment of Light, alongside Rex Harrington, former principal dancer of the National Ballet of Canada, and Robert Sher-Machherndl, former principal dancer of the Dutch National Ballet and Bavarian State Ballet. In 1992, the film was released.

Hart left the RWB to perform as a freelancer in 2005. She performed her swan song at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario, on August 23, 2006. She performed as a guest artist with Toronto's ProArteDanza, bringing an end to a 30-year career.
