Lindsay Michelle Mendez (born March 1, 1983) is an American actress and singer best known for her appearances in American musical theatre. Mendez received the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Carrie Pipperidge in a Broadway revival of Carousel.
Elphaba in Wicked (performing on the production's tenth anniversary), Godspell, and Grease as Jan. are among her Broadway credits.
Life and career
Mendez was born in Norwalk, California. Her father is of Mexican descent, and her mother is of Russian Jewish ancestry. In a preview of "A Little More Alive," written by Nick Blaemire in Kansas City, Lizzie played Lizzie. Other credits include roles in The Marvelous Wonderettes, 35MM, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well, and Paris's Princesses.
Mendez appeared in Dogfight as Eddie and Rose in Dogfight, as Eddie and Rose, and in Wicked as Fiyero and Elphaba. The two often appear together at the Broadway supper club 54 Below. At other cabarets and dining establishments with pianist Marco Paguia, Mendez performs jazz and blues. In 2013, the two released "This Time," a jazz collection. Actor Therapy: a five-week training session for young actors in NYC, was founded and operated by Mendez and composer Ryan Scott Oliver. She was nominated for the 2013 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and the 2013 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her role as Rose Fenny in Off-Broadway's Dogfight, and the 2013 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
Mendez appeared in Lin Manuel Miranda's one-act musical 21 Chump Street in 2014 and Laura in the play Significant Other in 2015.
While performing in Wicked, Mendez produced "Fly Girl: Backstage with Lindsay Mendez," giving an inside look at the smash musical, including interviews with current cast members, photos of costumes, sets, and props, as well as how Mendez herself became the Wicked Witch of the West's Wicked Witch.
