Leonard Fenton (born Leonard Feinstein; 1926) is a British actor, producer, and painter best known for his role as Dr.

Early life

Leonard Finestein was born in Stepney, the son of Fanny (Goldberg) and Morris Feinstein, a women's clothing designer. His parents, who migrated from Ashkenazi Jews with roots in Eastern Europe, lived in Riga, Latvia and Lithuania. He attended Raine Foundation Grammar School from 1937 to 1944. Fenton trained to be a civil engineer at King's College London, but he was later designated as an army engineer during World War II. After leaving the army, he spent five years in this service, but then decided against a career change. He took up acting and was offered a scholarship to attend the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Personal life and death

Madeline Thorner, a Fenton & Cellist, was born in 1967. They had four children and then separated. In addition to acting, he was also a trained painter and held many exhibitions. Fenton came out in favour of the Labour Party ahead of the 2010 general election after being featured in their election broadcast.

He died on January 29, 2022, at the age of 95. "A charming man in all respects, first as an individual and then as an actor, generous and kind."

Career

His acting career spanned more than 60 years. When Orson Welles was given a part in his play Chimes at Midnight, one of his first acting breaks came when he was given a role. Studio Four (1962); Colditz (1974); Secret Army (1977); Z-Cars (1978); And Shine on Harvey Moon (1982), where he appeared in the Austrian Jew, Erich Gottlieb. Fenton appeared in Samuel Beckett's Happy Days at the Royal Court Theatre in 1979, directed by Beckett himself.

Fenton was best known for his role as Dr. Harold Legg, one of the original characters in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. The character appeared from 1985 to 1997, with brief appearances in 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2020. The character was one of the program's key focal points, but after 1989, he became less prominent. Fenton's appearances in EastEnders were rare following the character's demise in 1997. He appeared at the funeral of Mark Fowler in 2004 and then consulted Dot Branning in June 2007 to advise her about Romanian 'foundling' baby Tomas.

Among Fenton's later television appearances were Rumpole of the Bailey (1991), So You Think You Have Trouble (1991); Love Hurts (1993); and The Bill (1985), among others. In the West End, he appeared in two productions by Lindsay Anderson, Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, and Ben Travers' last play, The Bed Before Yesterday. He appeared in many radio plays, including The Hobbit as the Elvenking and The Lord of the Rings as Daddy Twofoot, both on BBC Radio 4. The BBC webcast of the Doctor Who story Death Comes to Time was one of Fenton's other broadcasting ventures. He made a personal appearance on Channel 4's entertainment program, The Friday Night Project, on February 17, 2006. His film credits include roles in Up the Creek (1958), The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964), Robin Hood Junior (1975), Give My Regards to Broad Street (1984), Outer Space (1985), and The Zombie Diaries (2006).

Fenton's debut with After Chekhov, written by four contemporary writers Alan Drury, Martin Jago, Andrew Neil, and Olwen Wymark in the 100th anniversary year of Chekhov's death in December 2004. The piece, which was produced by Little London Theatre Company, was performed in the Soho Theatre Studio. Fenton appeared in a production of Cross Purpose directed by Stephen Whitson at the King's Head Theatre, London, in 2012 and again in 2013.

Fenton will reprise his role as Dr. Harold Legg in EastEnders in late 2018. The character lived until the end of February 2019, when he died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
