Early life
Princess Elizabeth was born at 02:40 (GMT) on April 21, 1926, during the reign of her paternal grandfather, King George V. Her father, Prince Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI), was the second son of the King. Elizabeth, Duchess of York (later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother) was the youngest daughter of Scottish aristocrat Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Princess Elizabeth was born in Mayfair by the Caesarean section, which was her grandfather Lord Strathmore's London home. Elizabeth was baptized by the Anglican Archbishop of York, Cosmo Gordon Lang, in the private chapel of Buckingham Palace on May 29; Alexandra after her paternal grandmother, who had died six months earlier; and Mary after her paternal grandmother. Her close family, based on what she referred to as "Lilibet"), adored her grandfather George V, whom she affectionately named "Grandpa England," and her regular visits during his serious illness in 1929 were credited in the national press and later biographers for raising his spirits and assisting him in his recovery.
Princess Margaret, Elizabeth's older sibling, was born in 1930. Marion Crawford, the two princesses, were educated at home under the tutee of their mother and their governess. Lessons were mainly based on history, literature, literature, and music. In 1950, Crawford published The Little Princesses, a chronicle of Elizabeth and Margaret's childhood years, much to the royal family's dismay. Elizabeth's book explores her obsession with horses and dogs, her orderliness, and her attitude of accountability. Some shared Winston Churchill's description of Elizabeth as "a character" when she was two. In an infant, she has an air of power and a keenness. Margaret Rhodes described her as "a jolly little girl, but also very intelligent and well behaved."
