Leilani Maaja Münter (born February 18, 1974) is an American former professional stock car racing driver and environmental activist.

She last competed in the ARCA Menards Series, and previously drove in the Firestone Indy Lights, the development league of IndyCar.

She was born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota, earned a degree in biology from the University of California, San Diego and currently lives in Cornelius, North Carolina.

Early life and education

Münter is the child of a Japanese-Hawaiian mother from the Island of Hawaii and a German father, who was working at the Hawaii State Hospital in Kāneʻohe. Her father relocated to Rochester, Minnesota for work at the Mayo Clinic, where she was born on February 18, 1974.

Prior to becoming a race car driver, Münter earned a bachelor's degree in biology, specializing in ecology, behavior, and evolution from the University of California, San Diego. During her college years, Münter was also a volunteer at a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center. She is an almost lifelong vegetarian and became vegan in 2011.

Personal life

On March 17, 2009, Münter married Craig Davidson, an engineer, in a seaside wedding on New Zealand's Cathedral Cove beach. Her personal car is an electric Tesla Model S, which she charges with solar panels on the roof of her home.

Münter identifies herself as being childfree: a position she largely owes to helping greatly reduce her ecological impact on the planet. She further believes that the decision to refrain from having any children must be normalized in order to deal with human overpopulation. She is also a patron of Population Matters in order to spread awareness regarding the issue.

Münter is the sister-in-law of musician Bob Weir, one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead.

Racing career

Münter began racing in California in the Allison Legacy Series in 2001. She debuted in seventh place in her seventh debut. Münter made the move to Mooresville, North Carolina, which is widely known as the center of NASCAR racing. She made her debut in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series at South Boston Speedway in 2003, finishing ninth. She started racing in 2004 at Texas Motor Speedway and set a new record when qualifying fourth, the highest qualifying attempt for a female driver at the track. It was also her first super late model run; she came in seventh place. She had her first full season in a race car in 2006. She had one of the best races of her career in her fifth race of the season, finishing fourth, a new record for a female driver in the history of the 1.5 mile speedway. Leilani became the first woman to qualify in the Tony Bettenhausen Classic in Illiana, Indiana, later this year. Münter received 19 top tens and 9 top ten finishes in 43 stock car starts. She was supposed to debut in the ARCA Series in 2007, a stepping stone series in NASCAR's top-three series at the end of the 2006 racing season. She completed her ARCA rookie test at Daytona International Speedway in December 2006. Münter was the 24th fastest of 59 race cars tested on the day in a race car prepared by Andy Hillenburg, a former racer who runs Fast Track Racing School, where Münter served as an instructor.

Münter was the fourth woman to play in the Indy Pro Series, IndyCar's growth league. Münter completed her Indy Pro Series rookie test at Kentucky Speedway in May. Sam Schmidt Motorsports, a three-time champion team, has been a member of the league since August. On August 11, she came in fifth for her first appearance at Kentucky Speedway. She had trouble getting back to the front of the field after a resurrectition and slumped to thirteenth place, but she returned to the front of the field. In the fifth fastest lap of the race, she rode five cars in a lap and a half and turned in the fifth fastest lap of the season at 192.399 mph. When she was involved in a multi-car accident, she was about to finish fourth. After her debut, four-time Indy 500 champion Rick Mears, IndyCar driver Jaques Lazier, and many others in the IndyCar community all spoke highly of Münter.

In December 2008, she returned to a stock car and tried an ARCA ARCA sedan at Daytona International Speedway for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver James Hylton. She returned to ARCA testing at Daytona in December 2009, driving the No. 58. Mark Gibson Racing's 59th Birthday, NextEra Energy Resources Dodge. Münter recorded the seventh fastest lap in final testing at 181.77 mph, just 69 one-thousandths behind Danica Patrick, who recorded the fifth fastest time in the final session. The two female drivers had previously worked together off the track in a Hostess ad campaign in 2006 and 2007.

Münter was one of only three women to qualify for the 2010 ARCA Racing Series at Daytona International Speedway, alongside Danica Patrick and Alli Owens. She was unable to finish the race after being arrested in a ten-car accident.

Münter was a participant in the ARCA Racing Series in 2012, racing for Tony Marks Racing in the season-opening 200 mile event at Daytona International Speedway, driving a car funded by fan contributions and sporting a Cove with an ocean awareness paint scheme.

Münter's 2014 debut with Venturini Motorsports began racing in ARCA. In the No. 3 Daytona Cup, she rode Daytona. Go 100% Renewable Energy racer, where she was ruined by a spinning car on lap 28 and finished the season in 28th position. Talladega Superspeedway, where she finished 14th in the No. 2 race of 2014, was her first race of the year. Sam Simon, an activist and producer of The Simpsons television show, sponsors 55 Blackfish (film) race cars. In the No. 11 at Chicagoland Speedway, she came in 12th on the lead lap for the No. 66. 66 The Solutions Project race car was built for the 66 PrairieGold Solar/The Solutions Project.
