Leigh Bardugo Life

Leigh Bardugo, an American young adult and fantasy writer best known for her Grishaverse books, including the Six of Crows duology and the Shadow and Bone trilogy, which have sold more than two million copies as well as Ninth House.

Early life

Bardugo was born in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1975, and she grew up in Los Angeles, California, where her grandparents were born. She is secular Jewish and of Moroccan Jewish descent on her father's side, as well as an Ashkenazi Jewish (Russian-Jewish) descent on her mother's side.

She attended Yale University, graduating with a degree in English in the spring of 1997. She belonged to the Wolf's Head clandestine group. She worked in copywriting and journalism, as well as makeup and special effects, before releasing her first book.

Personal life

Bardugo's acknowledgements section of Six of Crows indicates she suffers from osteonecrosis and occasionally needs to use a cane; this was a source of inspiration for one of the story's six protagonists, master thief and gang boss Kaz Brekker, who uses a cane.

Bardugo was a member of the band Captain Automatic from 2006 to 2007. In January 2022, she and her partner of four years eloped.

Literature students struggle to read one book every three weeks, Oxford professor warns

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 8, 2024
Academic Sir Jonathan Bate, a professor of English literature at Oxford University, believes students today have a reduced ability - and appetite - to delve into longer reads. Sir Bate believes the problem could stem from people's attention spans lessening as people increasingly consume content from social media rather than books - but he also points to schools putting shorter books on the curriculum. His comments come as social media influencers who enjoy reading have been openly admitting they 'skip' reading 'big paragraphs'.

Now BookTokers say they skip reading 'big paragraphs' in books and 'only read the dialogue' - as viewers accuse them of 'hating reading'

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 12, 2024
A BookTok row has erupted after an influencer admitted she 'skips' reading 'big paragraphs'.  Miranda from the US, who is known as @probablyoffreading online, sparked huge debate after posting the now-deleted TikTok video.  BookTok is a subsection of TikTok that has been credited with 'making reading cool again' - but whether or not Gen Z genuinely enjoy the books they're promoting is a matter up for debate. BookTok row erupts after influencer complains the novel she's reading has 'so many words on every page'

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 20, 2024
Questions have been raised over BookTok after an influencer went viral for complaining there were 'too many words' on the page. Yana from California (left) took to TikTok to review Six Of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, expressing her irritation that 'every page' contained 'so many words'. Others on the BookTok platform couldn't believe Yana's review (pictured: @jordy.pearson, centre and @hopechulka, right).
