Life
Lawrence Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College after public school. He returned to New York and spent time at Macy's Department Store in New York. In 1943, he joined the United States Marine Corps and was discharged in 1946. Sanders began as a magazine staff writer and later moved to full-time fiction writing. In 1970, he wrote The Anderson Tapes, his first book, at the age of 50. It concerns a conspiracy by a group of criminals to rob a luxury apartment building. Sanders was given an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 1971 for his first book.
