Laurentino "Nito" Cortizo Cohen (Spanish pronunciation: [rule tino kooti). (born 30 January 1953) is a Panamanian politician who has served as Panama's President since 2019. Cortizo is the former President of the National Assembly and Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development. He served as chamber president from 1994 to 2004.
He was elected president on in the 2019 general election as a member of the Democratic Revolutionary Party, winning 53.2 percent of the vote. He took office on July 1st.
Early life and education
Laurentino Cortizo Cohen was born in Panama City to Laurentino Cortizo, a Galician from Beariz, Spain, and Esther Cohen, both of Jewish descent, Esther Cohen.
Cortizo, the eldest of six siblings, attended Javier Elementary School and completed his secondary education at La Salle College in Diriamba, Nicaragua. He then moved to the Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania. He attended Norwich University, Vermont, the country's oldest military college. Cortizo obtained a master's degree in business administration and later a doctorate from the University of Texas in Austin.
Personal life
Cortizo is married to Yazmn Colón de Cortizo. They have two children, Carolina and Jorge. Carolina is the current head of Wingo, which is a part of Copa Airlines.

Early career
Cortizo left Washington, D.C., in 1981 to serve as a technical advisor to the Organization of American States' secretary-general. (OAS).
Cortizo assumed the post of Panama's alternate ambassador to the OAS in November 1986. He was a member of the budget committee and the private sector working group at the time. In addition, Cortizo chaired the working group for economic growth in the Central American isthmus and the permanent executive committee of the economic and social council.
Political career
Cortizo served as a member of the National Assembly from 1994 to 2004, and his party is classified as being from the centrist wing. He became President of the National Assembly in 2000 and served until 2001.
He also served as Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development under President Martn Torrijos, but he resigned in 2006 due to his opposition to the talks in pursuit of the US-Panama Free Trade Agreement.
